brought before the judge and charged with vagrancy, with the expectation of holding him in jail until the police could complete their case against him. The young man was submitted to a severe cross examination, but did not change his originai story. Finally, when asked what he was doing in his room during the hour in question, he said, “ I was reading my Bible.” The answer was so entirely unexpected that a ripple óf derisive laughter went through the crowded court room. Following up this statement the judge demanded to know exactly what part o f the Bible he had been reading. “ I was reading Paul’s Epistle to the Corinthians,” he said, in the most matter-of-fact manner, and stated the subject matter of his reading. Now the judge was not familiar with the Bible and Was uncertain whether the young man was really telling the truth or not. So he asked if anyone present knew whether these things were in the Bible. There was not one in all that crowd who; could answer. Then he called for . a Bible. After a search which lasted some little time the officers came back and reported that none could be found. “ Very well then, go buy one,” he said. When they pre sented the judge with the hastily purchased Bible he opened it confidently at Genesis and after leafing through to Psalms or Proverbs without finding Corinthians asked the young man to find thè place. Instantly he turned to the right chapter and handed the Bible back. After look ing over several pages the judge knew the young man had told the truth, and was so impressed that he personally followed the case. Within a few days the young man had fully established his innocence, and through friends found employment. He has since been advanced from one posi tion of trust to another. There is a Bible in that court today, for the judge has finished reading the Book from cover to cover .— The Presbyterian. Immanuel Hymnal T HE name of the hymnal expresses its purpose, namely, to glorify I T contains nearly 600 hymns—as many of the old favorites as are found in other hymnals. In addition, many really great hymns which have fallen out of use have been recovered. Also, a larger body o f new music of first-class quality than has appeared in Amer ican hymnology since the days o f Lowell Mason, a cen tury ago. Dr. John Herman Loud, Dean of the Guild of New England Organists says: the person and work of the Redeemer of mankind. Evangelical churches will find it exactly suited to their need.

“ They were contented and happy till the Hollywood craze made ’em restless. Then they were left orphans with money from a good wholesale grocery business, and here we are. I trailed along to protect ’em all I could, but it’s not much use. Mr. Wu’s being here is an answer to prayer, though. One day I was so discouraged I just got down by the bed and prayed in the old way I used to do, after camp meeting, and it was then God sent us Mr. Wu. Will you promise to keep track of us, Mr.-------what is it ? Haworth ? I could see you impressed those two girls of mine. You’re a preacher !” * * * * * “ But what,” asked Althea, “ became of 2220 Violet Vale Drive? And how about Mr. Wu? He interests me.” Elise and Pauline left their tennis and dropped down under a tree with the rest. “ Mr, Wu is just beginning his Freshman year at Col lege and is already a perfectly good Freshman member of the Thin Red Line, and 2220 Violet Vale Drive turned out to be the large house that Violet Vale Drive ended in. Took up so much room they just gave it any number within five hundred. I am at last at liberty to announce that it has been taken by Mr. Jeremiah Lynch Snowden to house and hold Aunt Margot’s family. Aunt Margot and Donald Donaldson went over it yesterday and are to move in before College opens, so 2220 is to be the Home for Devout Men out of Every Nation. Wonderful how I was led to that boy Wu ! Father remembers well his father’s work in China—fine native Christians. And Wu is the second generation. We are going to let him work in the heathen darkness that surrounds Pansy and Aunt Mary and Marguerite, but his home is to be right there at the end of the drive with Aunt Margot and Djemileh and Kaimakow and the Line. So he Won’t go home at the end of his Course here. He said to me that day I met him, ‘Mr. Haworth, I was holding on in faith; but my heart was heavy and it was hard sometimes to pray and realize the Lord had not forgotten me. I remembered Daniel alone in a heathen court and read him a lot. I cried to God for fellowship, for Christians to warm my spirit, and your coming is His answer.’ The last thing he said was this, as he went back into the yellow house, T thought, when I arrived here, that all the white Christians must have gone over to China. But now I know that is wrong, thank God. And you are my blood brother in Christ. The wall o f color . is broken down, though you are white and I am yellow.’ ” A sensational crime had been committed, and the police drag-net brought in scores of vagrants and suspic ious characters for examination. Among the throng was a young chap who instantly attracted the officers’ atten tion. His general appearance, his size, even the dark blue suit he wore answered the description given by one who had got a glimpse of the fleeing criminal. He was questioned closely. He could produce witnesses to verify most of his statements, but when it came to accounting for his whereabouts during the time the crime was com mitted he claimed to have been alone in his cold and cheer less room. The fact that he had just arrived in the city a few days previous, had no employment, and was with out funds increased suspicion of the officers. Unable to get enough evidence to charge him with the crime, he was Proved Innocent by a Bible B y A rthur F. R agatz
