“ Another Advance in Reference Bibles”
“ I let my hand slip out o f God’s hand,” said one. The other said: “My soul-life raveled at the point where I ceased to pray, because there were things in my life I could not speak to God about.” Prayer is a handclasp with God, a hem to life’s conflicts.— Selected. O ye lovers of the Lord Jesus, take time daily in the inner chamber with Him anew to drink in His heavenly love! It will make you strong in faith, and your joy will be full. Love, joy, faith, these will be our life each day through the grace of our Lord Jesus .—-Andrew Murray. —o— October 30 —“ Why askest thou thus after my name, seeing it is secret [Won derful] ? So Manoah took a kid with a meat offering, and offered it upon a rock unto the Lord. . . . It .came to pass, zvhen the flame went up toward heaven from off the altar, that the angel o f the Lord ascended in the flame o f the altar. . . . . And Manoah said unto his wife, We shall surely die, because we have seen God. But his wife said unto him, I f the Lord were pleased to kill us, he would not have received a burnt offering and a meat offering at our hands, neither would he have showed us all these things, nor would, as at this time, have told us such things as these” (Judges 13 :18-23). This is excellent reasoning, and may be o f great use to every truly religious mind, in cloudy and dark dispensations o f di vine providence. It is not likely that God. who has preserved thee so long, borne with thee so long, and fed and supported thee all thy life long, girding thee when thou knewest Him not, is less willing to save and provide for thee and thine now than He was when, probably, thou trust- edst less in Him. He who freely gave His Son to redeem thee, can never be indif ferent to thy welfare; and if He gives thee power to pray and to trust in Him, is it at all likely that He is now seeking an occasion against thee, in order to destroy thee? Add to this the very light that shows thee thy wretchedness, ingratitude and disobedience. It in itself is a proof that He is waiting to be gracious to thee. The bitter regret for thy unfaithfulness, argues that the light and fire are of God’s own kindling and are sent to direct and refine, not to drive thee out of the way and destroy thee. Nor would He have told thee such things of His love, mercy, and kindness, as He has told thee in His sacred Word, if He had been determined not to extend His mercy to thee. —Adam Clarke’s Commentary. —o-— October 31 —"Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not” (Jer. 33:3). Mark this: If all who read these lines would thus lay hold upon God, with holy violence and unconquerable persistence of faith-filled prayer, a good many things would give way against which we have been beating with our puny human wis dom and power in vain. The prayer- power has never been tried to its full ca pacity in any church. If we want to see mighty wonders o f divine grace and power wrought, in place of weakness, fail ure, and disappointment, let the whole Church answer God’s standing challenge:
