And like flowers o f hope will blossom into beauty in your heart. The precious words, like jewels, will glis ten all the day, With a rare effulgent glory that will brighten all the way! —o— November 8— “ Though I have afflicted thee-, 1 will afflict thee no more" ( Nah. 1 : 12 ). There is a limit to affliction. God sends it, and removes it. Do you sigh, and say, “When will the end be?” Let us quietly wait and patiently endure the will of the Lord till He cometh. Our Father takes away the rod when His design in using it is fully served. If the affliction is sent in order to test us, that our graces may glorify God, it will end when the Lord has made us bear witness to His praise. We would not wish the affliction to depart until God has gotten out of us all the honor which we can possibly yield Him. There may be today “a great calm.” Who knows how soon those raging billows will give place to a sea of glass, and the sea birds sit on the gentle waves ? After long tribulation, the flail is hung up, and the wheat rests in the garner. We may, be fore many hours are past, be just as happy as now we are sorrowful. It is not hard for the Lord to turn night into day. He that sends the clouds can as easily clear the skies. Let us be of good cheer. It is better farther on. Let us sing Hallelujah in anticipation. Oh, give Thy servant patience to be still, And bear Thy will; Courage to venture wholly on the arm That will not harm; The wisdom that will never let me stray Out of my way; The love that, now afflicting, knoweth’ best When I should rest. -— Selected. —o— November 9— “I prevented the dawning o f the morning” (Psa. 119:147). If Jesus, the strong Son of God, felt it necessary to rise before the breaking of the day to pour out His heart to God in prayer, how much more ought you to pray unto Him who is the Giver of every good and perfect gift, and who has promised all things necessary for our good. What Jesus gathered into His life from His prayers we can never know; but this we do know, that the prayerless life is a powerless life. A prayerless life may be a noisy life, and fuss around a great deal; but such a life is far removed from Him who, by day and night, prayed to God. Make thy petition deep, O heart of mine. Thy God can do much more Than thou canst ask; Launch out on the divine, Draw from His love-filled store. Trust Him with everything; Begin today, And find the joy that ,comes When Jesus has His way, —Selected. ;—O-'— November 10— “ Blessed are all they that wait for him" (Isa. 30:18). We hear a great deal about waiting on God. There is, however, another side. When we wait on God, He is waiting till

Then nestle your hand in your Father’s, And sing if you can as you go; Your song may cheer some one behind you, Whose courage is sinking low ; And—-well, if your lips do quiver, God will love you better so. —o— November 5— “I know him, that he will command his children” (Gen. 18:19). God wants people that He can depend upon. He could say of Abraham, “ I know him, that he will command his children, . . . . that the Lord may bring upon Ab raham that which he hath spoken.” God can be depended upon; He wants us to be just as decided, as reliable, as stable. This is just what faith means. God is looking for men on whom He can put the weight of all His love and power and faithful promises. God’s engines are strong enough to draw any weight we attach to them. Unfortunately the cable which we fasten to the. engine is often toe weak to hold the weight o f our prayer; there fore God is drilling us, disciplining us to stability and certainty in the life o f faith. Let us learn our lessons and stand fast. • —A. B. Simpson. —,0— November 6— “ The very God o f peace sanctify you wholly” (1 Thess. 5:23). . A great tidal wave is bearing up the stranded ship, until she floats above the bar without a straining timber or strug gling seaman. Instead of the ineffectual and toilsome efforts o f the struggling crew and the strain o f the engines which had tried in vain to move her an inch, that heavenly impulse lifted her by its own attraction. God’s great law of gravi tation lifts by the warm sunbeams the mighty iceberg which a million men could not raise a single' inch. It melts away be fore the rays Mid the warmth o f the sun shine, and rises in clouds o f evaporation to meet its embrace until that cold and heavy mass is floating in fleecy clouds of glory in the blue ocean o f the sky. How easy all this! How mighty! How simple! How divine! Beloved, have you come into the divine way of, holiness? If you have, how your heart must swell with grati tude! If you have not, do you long for it, and will you not unite in the prayer of the text that the very God of peace will sanctify you wholly? “Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.” — Selected. —o— November 7— “I delight in thy law” (Psa. 119:70). The vigor of our spiritual life will be in proportion to the place held by the Word of God in our life and thoughts. The first three years after conversion, I neglected the Word. Since I began to search it, the blessing has been wonderful. I have read the Bible . through one hundred times, always with increasing delight. Each time it seems like a new Book. I look upon it as a lost day when I have not had a good time oventhe Word. ^George Muller. A moment in the morning take your Bible in your hand, And catch a glimpse of glory from the peaceful Promised Land! It will linger still before you when you reach the' busy mart,
