we are ready; when we wait for God, we are waiting till He is ready. There are some people who say, and many more who believe, that as soon as we meet all condi tions, God will answer our prayers. They say that God lives in an eternal now ; with Him there is no past nor future; and that if we could fulfill all that He re quired in the way of obedience to His will, immediately our needs would be supplied, our desires fulfilled, our prayers answered. There is much truth in this belief, and yet it expresses only one side of the truth. While God lives in an eternal now, yet He works out His purposes in time. A peti tion presented before God is like a seed dropped in the ground. Forces above and beyond our control must work upon it, till the true fruition of the answer is given. —The Still Small Voice. —o— November 11 —“He faileth not" (Zeph. 3 :5). To trust in spite o f the appearance of being forsaken, to keep crying out into the vast whence comes no returning voice and where seems no hearing, to see the ma chinery of the world pauselessly grinding on as if self-moved, caring for no life, nor shifting a hair-breadth for all en treaty, and yet believe that God is awake, and utterly loving; to desire nothing but what comes meant for us from His hand; to wait patiently, ready to die of hunger, fearing only lest faith should fait—such is the victory that overcometh the world, such is faith indeed. —George MacDonald. Though billows of sorrow should roll, And surround me on every side; Yet Thou canst the tempest control, My Saviour, my Refuge, and Guide. Thy smile makes the soul to expand, And graces celestial to grow; With rapture I gaze on the land Where pleasures incessantly flow. To dwell in the essence o f love. — Selected. ■ ' J ■. - • . ■ , o— ft November 12 —“He turned the sea into dry land : they went through the flood on foot: there did we rejoice in him” ( Psa. 66:6). :It is a striking assertion, “through the floods”—the place where we might have expected nothing but trembling and terror, anguish and dismay. “There,” says the Psalmist, “did we rejoice in him” ! How ifiany there are who can endorse --this as their experience. In their seasons o f dis tress and sadness, they have been enabled, as they never were before, to triumph and rejoice. How near their God in covenant is brought! How brightly shine His prom ises 1 In the day o f our prosperity we can not see the brilliancy of these. Like the sun at noon, hiding the stars from sight, they are indiscernibje; but when night overtakes, the deep, dark night of sorrow, out come these clustering stars—blessed constellations of Bible hope and promise of consolation. Like Jacob at Jabbok, it is when our earthly sun goes down that the divine angel comes forth, and we wrestle with Him and prevail. How many pil
grims, still passing through these Red Seas and Jordans of earthly affliction, will be enabled in the retrospect o f eternity to say—full of the memories o f God’s great goodness—-“We went through the flood on foot, THERE—there, in those dark ex periences, with the surging waves on every side, deep calling to deep, our Jordan, as when Israel crossed it, in ‘the time of the overflowing1—THERE did. we rejoice in Him l”—Faith. November 13 —“ Thou shalt shut the door upon thee and upon thy sons" (2 Ki. 4:4). - They were to he alone with God, for they were not dealing with the laws of na ture, nor human government, nor the Chtjrch, nor the priesthood, nor even with the great prophet of God. They must needs be isolated from all creatures, from all leaning circumstances, from all tradi tions of history, from all props o f human reason, and swung off, as it were, into the vast blue inter-stellar space, hanging on God alone, in touch with the fountain of miracles. Here is a part in the program of God’s dealings, a secret chamber o f isola tion in prayer and faith which every soul must enter that is very fruitful. There are times and places where God will form a mysterious wall around us, and cut away all props, and all the ordinary ways of doing things, and shut us up to something divine, which is Utterly new and unex pected, something that old circumstances do not fit into, where we do not know just what will happen, where God is cut ting the cloth of our lives on a new pat tern, where He makes us look to Him. Most religious people live in a sort of tread-mill life, where they can calculate almost everything that will happen, but the souls that God leads out into imme diate and special dealings, He shuts in where all they know is that God has hold o f them, and is dealing with them, and their expectation is from Him alone. Like this widow, we must be detached from outward things and attached inwardly to the Lord alone in order to see His won ders.— G. D. W. —°— November 14 —“He is our peace” (Eph. 2:14). All that Jesus (as the Anointed One of God) has, He has for you. The divine Father has filled the humanity o f Jesus with the resources of deity, that out of His fulness you might receive grace for grace. I look up, and I see yonder, on the throne, the beloved Son of God. Still the Son o f man; and as Man, I know He lives for you. Nothing can thwart His plans or defeat His mighty purposes. We are safe in Him, and, leaving all in His hands, we may “be still” and know that He is God. — R. W. Pennefather.
