A legacy that lasts Laura Forbes Future Gifts Manager One of the special parts of my role at Christ’s College is seeing how strong the connection to this school remains long after boys leave at the end of Year 13.
For many Old Boys and families, College is much more than a school. It is where friendships began, confidence grew, and important life lessons were learnt. For many, that connection becomes even more meaningful over time. I often speak with members of our community who feel deeply grateful for what College gave them. That gratitude sometimes leads to a simple question – how can I give something back? For some, the answer is a gift in their Will. After taking care of your loved ones first, a bequest allows you to support College in a way you have always wanted. It celebrates your relationship with the school and helps ensure it remains strong for future generations. Bequests make a real difference. They help the Board and leadership team plan with confidence and ensure boys in the years ahead benefit from the same opportunities that meant so much to those who came before them. Michael Ormsby, an Old Boy from Hawke’s Bay, has chosen to leave a generous gift to Christ’s College through his estate. His bequest will support the future of the school and ensure the continuation of the Ormsby Memorial Medal, awarded each year to the Head Prefect. The medal honours his grandfather, Charles Montague Ormsby – known as Monty – who attended College from 1888 to 1896. Monty was remembered as both a capable student and someone who looked out for others. Michael shared that his grandfather was “always trying to protect the little guys”. When Monty died at just 31 in a farm accident, Old Boys from South Canterbury donated £50 in his honour so his legacy could continue at the school. That story has always stayed with Michael. “I am compelled to leave a bequest on behalf of my grandfather,” he wrote. “That is why I am making this bequest – to honour his deeds.” The Ormsby family connection to Christ’s College now spans four generations, and through Michael’s bequest that connection will continue well into the future. If you have ever thought about leaving a bequest to College, I would be very happy to have a confidential conversation with you. There is no obligation — just an opportunity to talk through what might feel right for you.
Your connection to Christ’s College does not end when you leave the school gates. A legacy gift is one way it can continue.
