The Myth of the ‘Fourth Estate’

Journalists are fearless individuals seeking the truth while operating in hostile environments. They are unarmed, but for a pen and a camera - their only tools of spirited defence against those ruthless regimes. Having survived a four-year plight, I regret to say that the so-called ‘fourth estate’ is nothing but a myth. We, the journalists, are caught up in a disproportionate warfare against all the three branches of authority: legislative, executive and judicial.

Freedom of expression will always be devoured by the powerful, unless effective legal mechanisms are put in place, ending the impunity for crimes against journalists. Until this materialises, the ‘fourth estate’ will remain an empty slogan - a myth.
