SECRETARY CLINTON AND SWANSEA UNIVERSITY Swansea University has enjoyed a close relationship with Secretary Clinton that dates back to 2017. In October of that year, the University was proud to confer an Honorary Doctorate on Hillary Rodham Clinton, in recognition of her political career, commitment to human rights and her ancestral connections with the City. During the ceremony, Secretary Clinton gave a keynote lecture on children’s human rights and unveiled a plaque to commemorate the naming of the Hillary Rodham Clinton School of Law. Secretary Clinton returned to Swansea to meet with Law School colleagues in 2018, and again in 2019 to launch the Global Challenges Programme, and meet the five inaugural scholars. She was also the guest of honour in the ‘Gutsy Welsh Women’ panel before an audience of hundreds of leading businesswomen, entrepreneurs, university staff and students, and members of the wider university community. Close contact was maintained with the University throughout 2020, with the Secretary sharing her experiences and insights with the Scholars, and delivering the James Callaghan Memorial Lecture as part of the University’s centenary celebrations. Secretary Clinton has kept a keen relationship with each subsequent cohort of Global Challenges Scholars, meeting each cohort a number of times to discuss their unique research, and offer her own insights and advice. Their learning was supported by the Global Challenges Lecture Series; a series of sessions with world leaders and experts, including Secretary Clinton herself.
