Team Matters November 2021

UNC Health is a not-for-profit medical system owned by the state of North Carolina and based at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Andrew McCollum , logistics and supply chain manager at UNC Health, has the ever- important role of making sure their affiliate hospitals and clinics have the medical supplies they need. JOHN MOSS , our transportation specialist in Raleigh, connected Andrew to our wide range of capabilities, and he shares how our dynamic partnership began. “We started working with UNC Health because they were having frequent service failures with one of our competitors,” says John. “Our relationship started with us handling their LTL outbound freight, until one day they urgently needed to move shipments of respirators. Our specialized services team got involved, and we got the job done. After that, Andrew was having trouble getting some of their local moves across town. He brought this need to our team, and we were able to set up a daily dedicated run to take care of it.” That’s when Andrew and his team experienced the value that Averitt brings to the table, and he realized there is much more we can do than LTL alone. Because of that, Andrew began using more of our unique capabilities for local customization opportunities, expedited services, white glove services, and Averitt celebrates 50 years during a time in history when both the transportation and health care industries have never been more essential. And during this day of real-life heroes, UNC Health Care joins hands with Averitt to supply urgent medical equipment to support local hospitals and clinics. their newest daily dedicated route. Through our growing relationship with UNC Health, we’ve grown our business while providing essential services that empower the heroes in our health care industry. “Throughout the pandemic, Averitt has continued to provide the carrier capacity for UNC Health to reach our affiliate hospitals in the state,” says Andrew. “Whether it was shipping full pallets of isolation gowns and ear loop masks to UNC Rockingham, or shipping ventilators to support a field hospital at UNC Caldwell, Averitt has been the vital link in our supply chain to deliver vital PPE (personal protective equipment) and equipment to support our clinicians and patients.” While there are plenty of transportation companies to choose from, Andrew shares what sets Averitt apart and why our team is the best choice to handle the transportation needs of UNC Health. “What makes Averitt stand out is reliability and consistency in an ever- changing industry,” says Andrew. “It’s plain to see that growth has allowed Averitt to navigate the current industry constraints and adapt to meet our needs. And Averitt’s drivers, sales, and operations teams are always attentive and strive to meet our goals.” Raleigh service center director LOYD MCELVEEN is proud of his team and is looking forward to being The Carrier of Choice for UNC Health for years to come. “This has been a great example of The Power of One, and we’re not finished yet,” says Loyd. “Andrew continues to approach us with additional opportunities. It’s been a great journey to this point, and we are excited about where the future will take us with UNC Health.” We want to recognize our whole team for everything you do to keep our economy moving. You are essential, appreciated, and excellent at what you do. Your efforts have helped us reach our first 50 years as a team, and we’re looking forward to many more to come. T m
