ENJOYING THE FOURTH OF JULY
JULY 2020
A Time to Spend With Family
of the games we played, but I did have a lot of fun going up against other members of my family, which is what’s most important to me.
As you know, the Fourth of July is for celebrating the anniversary of America’s independence. On this day 244 years ago, the Continental Congress officially adopted the Declaration of Independence. Independence Day didn’t become a federal holiday until 1870, but that didn’t stop people from celebrating year after year. Today, everyone enjoys many of the same traditional methods of celebration that older generations did over two centuries ago — fireworks, parades, outdoor cookouts, and family gatherings. For my family and I, the Fourth has always been a time to relax with each other. While we all enjoy the typical celebrations, we mostly enjoy a more casual and relaxed atmosphere. Even growing up, my family has never been big on fighting the crowds that come with attending parades or fireworks shows. Our tradition was always to go to my grandparents, where we’d shoot off fireworks in the driveway, enjoy some hamburgers and hot dogs, and of course, make our homemade ice cream. It was
I never felt too upset about missing Fourth of July parades as a kid, and as an adult, the family prefers to stay home and sleep in rather than packing in the car to join the crowds. But we do try to catch fireworks shows when we can. You can have fun watching them without getting into the thick of things. When we do go see shows, we try to find a spot that isn’t too close or too far away. Afterward, we head back home and light some of our own. Nowadays, we’ll sometimes catch a fireworks show, but usually we stay home and do much of what we did when I was younger. This year, with everything going on, I’m hoping that things will open up enough to allow people to enjoy the traditions they’ve enjoyed in the past. The Fourth is a time for celebration, and it’ll be a little sad if we can’t all enjoy what we’ve come to look forward to this time of year. If you aren’t able to celebrate in the usual way, I hope that you can find a new way of celebrating that your whole family can enjoy. Whether that means making a few calls, starting up a reunion on a FaceTime call, or even grilling for the first time, I’m sure whatever you choose will be the best for you and your family.

Meals on Wheels Goes the Extra Mile A MEAL FOR EVERY MEMBER OF THE FAMILY
the Last Minute
Meals on Wheels doesn’t often get the credit it deserves. The international nonprofit ensures those who are unable to buy or make their own meals get the food they need to survive. Of course, for many recipients, the efforts of the organization go far beyond “survival.” For those who receive food daily or weekly, those deliveries may be their only source of social interaction. And during times of social distancing, the program became more important than ever. Meals on Wheels doesn’t just serve meals to the elderly and people with disabilities — it also serves those people’s pets. In 2019, Meals on Wheels Atlanta realized there was a huge need in their community to feed the pets of senior citizens. It stands to reason that if an elderly individual is unable to shop or cook for themselves, their pets may be in a similar predicament. And when someone’s pet is their entire world, making sure the animal is fed and healthy means everything. In response to this need, Meals on Wheels Atlanta began stocking up on cat and dog food, creating their own pantry to serve the local pet community. When volunteers made their rounds delivering meals to seniors, they made sure to bring cat and dog food along too. One volunteer with Meals on Wheels Atlanta, Larry Auberbach, had a unique experience delivering meals to Jeffery Jones and his dog, Grizzly. The volunteer told 11Alive News in Atlanta that Jeffery and Grizzly “have their own special relationship.” Larry loved Grizzly long before Meals on Wheels Atlanta started the pet pantry because he saw how much Grizzly’s companionship meant to Jeffery. Now, Larry enjoys his service that much more since he gets to provide for Jeffery’s beloved pet, as well. On top of delivering food to seniors and their pets, Meals on Wheels Atlanta also delivers pet toys and pet beds, and they are happy to take in any pet-related food or items for donation. The organization says this endeavor was done out of love, not only for the people they serve but also for the whole family — wagging tails, fuzzy whiskers, and all.
GET SCHEDULED BEFORE THE FALL
When COVID-19 came to the U.S., our team at Auburn Dental Center did everything we could to ensure both our staff and our patients remained safe. We limited the amount of people in the office by only seeing those who needed urgent care for serious dental issues. Any patients who had appointments for checkups or regular cleanings were rescheduled for a later date. Then, as the country began its slow reopening throughout late May and June, we began seeing patients more often. We’re hoping that by the time this newsletter is released, we’re able to see far more of our patients than we have all spring to address whatever their needs may be. This time of year, our team gets fairly busy because the new school year is just around the corner. Hopefully, schools will open fairly normally come August, which means parents will want their kids in for their yearly checkups. However, we might be even busier this year than we have been before.
With the many appointments we’ve rescheduled in the past few months, it might be difficult to see any more patients who haven’t been scheduled already. As fall comes closer and closer, we’ll have fewer and fewer open spots. Because of this, we urge you to call our office and schedule an appointment sooner rather than later. We know how important it is to start a new school semester with a bright smile, and through our services, everyone in the family can get that smile.
If you or your child don’t have an appointment with us, now is your chance to get on our calendar. Call the office at 402-274-5110 today.

THE IMPORTANCE OF MOUTHWASH
integrate mouthwash into your routine now, it will eventually come naturally to you every night, and your teeth will look better than ever because of it. Why Mouthwash? Should I Use It to Rinse? One of the main questions people often ask themselves is, “Should I use mouthwash?” When you rinse with mouthwash, you are giving your mouth an extra boost of cleaning as well as an extra layer of protection. Brushing and even flossing aren’t always able to reach every corner of your mouth, but a quick rinse of mouthwash can. Adding the use of mouthwash to your oral hygiene routine helps fight against gingivitis and tooth decay, as well as strengthens the enamel of your teeth. While good for oral health, mouthwash should not be used as a replacement for brushing and flossing.
When to Rinse The American Dental Association states that “the question of whether to rinse before or after brushing may depend on personal preference; however, to maximize benefit from the oral care products used, manufacturers may recommend a specific order for their use, depending on ingredients.” For example, if you use a fluoride toothpaste, then wait 30 minutes after you’ve brushed your teeth to use mouthwash because rinsing will wash out the fluoride from your mouth. When used alongside brushing and flossing, mouthwash becomes a beneficial and effective tool for optimum oral health. If you have any questions about which type of mouthwash you should use, ask the Auburn Dental Center team on your next visit for a professional recommendation.
Brushing twice a day and flossing once a day is the best way to maintain your oral health, and using mouthwash can help you even more. Often, rinsing with mouthwash is overlooked because brushing and flossing might be considered more crucial. Additionally, many people who already struggle to floss daily might find that adding yet another step to their nightly routine is difficult. But if you

KNOCK KNOCK! WHO’S THERE?
The Wacky Evolution of the Knock-Knock Joke
Not very funny, is it? Well, over the years this style of back-and-forth jesting evolved into knock-knock jokes. The popularity of the “knock knock” bit of the joke could harken back to Shakespeare, who BestLife credits with “the first-known occurrence of a knock knock, who’s- there dialogue” in Act 2 of “Macbeth” (though it likely
Unless you’re living under a rock, odds are you’ve laughed, grumbled, or groaned in response to a knock-knock joke. You may have even told a few yourself before you realized knock-knock jokes had gone out of style in favor of sarcasm and memes. That’s because at their core, knock-knock jokes are a quintessential American experience
wasn’t intended to be funny), or it could be a reference to 1936 vice presidential hopeful Frank Knox, whose name made “knock knock” irresistible wordplay for the radio. Whatever the reason, knock knocks were all the rage in the 1930s, to the extent that people formed knock-knock clubs, businesses held knock-knock contests, and orchestras set them to music. However, the heyday was

— and the perfect homegrown fodder for International Joke Day, which falls on July 1. But where did they come from, and why do so many people knock the knock-knock joke today?
Well, according to NPR, knock- knock jokes have had a roller coaster of a history. Near as we can tell, they actually evolved from another kind of joke: the “Do You Know” joke. This style of joke was popular in the early 1900s, and according to an Oakland Tribune article NPR dug up, this was a typical one:
short-lived. In the following years, people started getting sick of knock knocks, and even psychologists turned against them. According to NPR, “people who loved knock-knock jokes were said to have social problems.” Today, knock-knock jokes are still around, but they’re mostly considered a game for kids or demoted to the realm of “bad dad jokes.” Maybe you think that’s warranted, maybe you think it’s tragic — either way, odds are the format will continue to evolve and probably outlive us all!
