The fabrication of the steel structure was car- ried out in the cities of Lauterbourg Nantes and Charleville-Mézières. Lengths of lami- nated steel and different shapes of cast steel were assembled by manual and semi-auto- matic welding. The laminate steel is in sev- eral grades of toughness; the thick tension member is in S355NL grade, the less thick plates in the compression boom, and the sup- port moment transformer is in S355N. These are fine grained structural steels. In the code S symbolises Structural, 355 is the nominal strength as the elastic limit, in MPa., N sym- bolises Normalised (the steel is heated then allowed to cool slowly) and L symbolises that is has good low temperature toughness. The steel is also shown to have good transverse ductility, to avoid crcking under the welds of the fasces. The steels are made in Dillingen, Ittre and Outreau. Other materials had been considered during the design process. The higher strength steels, grade S420, were inter- esting but not widely available, and the reduc- tion of section would have caused an unfortu- nate increase in deflections.
