t he Goble house is set between the town of Mountain View and the Waterton Lakes park gates. Approach is by a semi-private road through a treeless prairie landscape which winds around an irrigation pond for the vegetable garden, swimming and skating, and arrives at the house at the northernmost point of the two-hectare site.
This house is a shelter as well as a container for an extensive col- lection of books, art and furniture from around the world. The Gobles, raised in Southern Alberta, have spent twenty years liv- ing on the Atlantic, returning ‘home’ every summer. They appre- ciate the difference between vernacular forms of the west and regional architecture of the Maritimes and asked for a regionally responsive design for a site at the base of the rugged mountains of Waterton Lakes National Park on the gently rolling landscape of the Alberta foothills.
