MARY BETH CAMPBELL w CHARLOTTETOWN’S LUXURY MARKET IS YOUR ONE-STOP DESIGNER VINTAGE SHOP

W hat’s old is new again, which probably explains why vintage shopping has become popular in recent years. Nothing beats finding the perfect unique bag or shoe to complete your outfit. Luxury Market’s owner Mary Beth Campbell knows the feeling. She was inspired to open her consignment shop by her love of vintage unique clothing and lack of options for thrifting in Charlottetown. Blending her passion for thrifting with her business studies from UPEI and Holland College, Campbell initially started her business as a hobby before things took off. “I love clothing and have always followed the latest trends and tried to figure out how to make them work on a budget,” Campbell says. “I like the idea of having luxury quality items at affordable prices.” She shares that she chose “luxury” as her main component for items because she believes in “quality over fast fashion”and for the fact that “fast fashion items just don’t hold up and don’t resell well.” Clients can peruse a slew of fashion and accessories with recognizable high-end designer names, such as Burberry, Louis Vuitton, and Michael Kors.

Campbell says she chooses what items are accepted based on quality, brands, style, and condition. “If an item is out of season or not in style I do not accept it. I accept items based on what clients tell me they are looking for and what is trending. I stay away from mall brand items as much as possible and try to stick with unique designer brands.” For those who’ve never purchased clothing from a consignment shop before, Campbell says there are many benefits to it, including that your sense of style immediately stands out from the crowd. “Buying from consignment means you don’t have to dress like everyone else,” she shares. “You also know that you are getting quality clothing. I also love the idea of recycling and not polluting the environment with fast fashion. It’s definitely becoming more popular, especially as people become environmentally aware.”

As for what’s next for the store, Campbell says she would love to

include some more Canadian designers in the mix. “I carry a few lines now that are great but would love to have more. I would also love to someday open another store in a different city. But for now we are focused on perfecting our system and keeping our customers satisfied.”
