TELLING STORIES AND BUILDING BRANDS THROUGH LIGHT AND SHADOW

w

On paper Story Thorburn Sheidow might seem relatively new to professional photography and that’s precisely what makes her impressive client resume of nearly 150 Island businesses and climbing—plus countless individuals—all the more remarkable. While Story works in most fields of photography, it’s in commercial, branding and creative portraiture that her heart lives - and for good reason. “I think of photography as a form of storytelling, and having a background in marketing has helped me understand how to best tell my clients’ story. From styling to lighting to colour palettes - getting the details right makes all the difference in building a successful narrative, and I find it all so fascinating.” Thorburn says. Thorburn offers something many other Island photographers don’t: a talent and skill set for creating eye-catching imagery with an extensive 20-year background in marketing and business By Alana Lauren Photo Story Thorburn

management. This uncommon portfolio allows her to bring an unrivalled perspective to her clients, allowing for a distinctive, multifaceted approach to her services. Thorburn generally begins working with clients months before their scheduled photo session. Instead of simply being a “hired photographer,” Thorburn integrates elements of her marketing and branding knowledge to enhance her clients’ experience. With her commercial clientele, she offers an additional array of built-in services, free of charge, such as branding consulting, model sourcing, and mood boards complete with inspiration photos, colour palettes, posing guides, wardrobe examples and more. Every photo shoot is customized to best serve each client, and Thorburn strives to make each artistic concept unique, putting in hours of research to “get it right”. The results of her efforts are images with a seamless blend of the moody, dramatic style she has become known

for and the individual branding style best suited to her clients.

“I love a dramatic photographic style, but drama isn’t always an element of the brand or niche of my clients. Because of this I concentrate on being always adaptable, knowing how to light, stage, and direct a variety of photographic styles from ‘light and airy’ to high-contrast, and everything in between.” Her previous work as editor in chief of PEI Living magazine has given her priceless insight on visual marketing, helping her to continuously push herself to create one-of-a-kind, engaging imagery in all styles – with her clients’ needs as her number one priority.
