LADY’S MANTLE

FIVE PERENNIALS TO ADD TO YOUR GARDEN THIS SPRING When the initial signs of spring emerge, we eagerly anticipate diving into the soil and indulging in gardening. Here are five perennial plants that I love to incorporate into my garden as spring begins.

A gorgeous chartreuse flowering plant that is stunning in any garden. It’s perfect for PEI with our long cold spring temperatures. It puts on a show from spring into mid-summer and complements spring bulbs and early summer flowers.

SPRING BULBS

These include: crocus’, tulips, daffodils, hyacinth, irises’, grape hyacinth, scilla, hellebores and allium. After a long winter, the garden comes alive with these spring bulbs. The trick to keeping tulips and daffodils reappearing year after year is to leave the leaves in place until they have turned yellow which brings energy back to the bulb needed for next years’ growth.

PHLOX

Ground creeping phlox offers a beautiful edging to the front of your garden border and makes a great impact in mass plantings. It is covered with beautiful lavender, pink, or white coloured blooms that will be covered with beneficial pollinators.

CANDYTUFT

A low-growing ground cover that blooms profuse clusters of beautiful white or light pink flowers in a mounding shape, candytuft requires full to partial sun, well- draining soil of any pH, and grows in a variety of temperatures.

ORIENTAL POPPY

One of the most familiar of all poppies is the Oriental poppy native to Asia. This perennial garden plant is a common feature of northern gardens, with its feathery foliage and orange, red, or salmon flowers that bloom in June and July.
