There’s give and take, like in a relationship.” constitute unfamiliar territory for many newlyweds. Alisa Beck, who helms the interior design Alisa advises her clients at Beck’s Home & Heating to find shared aesthetic touchstones to build on. Those might include individual decor elements, such as a specific type of hardwood or tile flooring “that both are attracted to,” or general colour and style preferences: light versus dark, warm versus cool, contemporary versus craftsman-style. “An interior designer can help blend two personalities, and two sets of style and taste, together,” Alisa explains. Carrying the bride “over the threshold” is one of the best- known wedding traditions. Designing the home that awaits beyond that threshold is also key to modern wedding planning.
She reminds newlyweds moving into “starter” homes to consider splurges carefully, avoiding overly distinctive
permanent elements. “For a starter home, I wouldn’t suggest investing in, say, a cherry- red granite countertop. If you make finishes and updates too personal, you narrow the market.” A better approach, she says, is to “keep permanent elements neutral, so if you removed your personal belongings, the home would appeal to 95 per cent of the population. Then ‘pop’ it up with accessories and furnishings in bold, personal colours.”
