Since 1887, Island audiences have visited King’s Playhouse for vaudeville acts, community theatricals, and professional productions. Throughout the 2010s, the Playhouse has also become an increasingly popular setting for private celebrations. Today, it’s one of the Island’s most enchanting wedding venues. “It’s sort of a hidden gem,” says King’s Playhouse Interim Executive Director Catherine O’Brien. Not so hidden, however, that it hasn’t been booked long-distance by out-of-province wedding parties. “We’ve welcomed lots of locals, but we’ve also welcomed people from across the country,” confirms King’s Playhouse Executive Director Haley Zavo. A number of potential ceremony and reception settings are available at the Playhouse. The wooden deck, lush A. A. MacDonald Memorial Gardens (featuring a gazebo and fountain), and even the Playhouse’s proscenium stage are perfect backdrops for intimate celebrations.
O’Brien. “It’s a lovely spot for the wedding party.” She adds that guests may also book one of the Georgetown area’s cottages or bed-and-breakfasts, or the Rodd Brudenell River Resort in Brudenell, just down the road from the Playhouse. Couples have complete freedom when it comes to catering arrangements, and the Playhouse offers convenient on-site culinary services helmed by Red Seal Chef Amil Zavo. “Chef Zavo can design a plated meal, buffet, or light snacks,” says O’Brien. “He’s excellent at preparing vegan dishes and catering to food allergies. He can adapt to anything.” The kitchen is beverage-licensed, and complimentary bartending is provided to wedding groups who book the fully-stocked bar. Couples can also arrange to serve guests a custom cocktail or wine vintage of their choice.

Meanwhile, the on-site event hall--a sleek, contemporary space with hardwood-style floors and understated chandeliers--can accommodate a hundred guests or more. Free parking is available, and the property is largely accessible. Wedding parties and their guests are encouraged to take advantage of the Playhouse’s facilities before and after the ceremony. Playhouse staff provide the earliest possible access to the venue to allow the party to decorate, and are happy to assist in the process; wedding party access to the theatre’s dressing rooms is also included in the booking. “Brides and bridesmaids can use the dressing rooms to prepare,” explains Zavo. “When it’s time for the ceremony, they simply walk downstairs.” As couples fine-tune the details of their day, King’s Playhouse offers support and flexibility. The team is happy to recommend local photographers or nearby accommodations. “The Historic Georgetown Inn is located directly across from the Playhouse,” notes
performances influences scheduling, so planning ahead is advisable. “Most people like to book almost a year in advance,” confirms O’Brien. That said, “If somebody called last minute, and a date was available, we would certainly try to accommodate them.” There’s a fairy tale quality to the King’s Playhouse. Countless “happy endings,” both matrimonial and theatrical, have passed within its walls. “In theatre, we’re in the business of making magic happen,” says O’Brien. “We leave wedding guests with that special magic.”
