FAMILY
CATIO
There is a lot of debate about keeping indoor cats versus allowing your cat to roam free throughout the neighbourhood. Cats are known for their independent nature, combined with the fact that cats are natural athletes, and it’s all too easy for an indoor cat to go stir crazy if it can’t work out that excess energy. Most cat owners are familiar with the three a.m. zoomies. By far, the best argument is the fact that outdoor cats have much shorter lifespans compared to indoor cats because they face threats from predators, accidents and disease. We love our cats—my indoor cat, Miss Kitty, is a constant companion in my home office and even has her own comfy chair. I want her to have a healthy and happy life.
in front of a window or a cat bed that attaches directly to the window with suction cups will give them a front row seat and keep your cat entertained for hours.
Everyone has heard about catios; they're enclosed outdoor patios that your cat can access and enjoy time outside. Be sure to allow for shade or protection from the weather unless there is a way for your cat to go inside as desired. Catio kits are available, or if you’re handy, build a DIY catio. Include places to climb and perch as well as access to fresh water and shelter.
CLIMBING AND PERCHING
Cats love watching the world from above; it’s instinct to seek out high places to hunt, sleep and relax. It’s impossible to keep them off favourite perches like countertops, dressers and staircases, so ensure your cat has a variety of spots to climb and perch safely. Cat trees can be a great option; they have a variety of platforms for viewing and often include stratching posts that can be used for climbing. There are also kits that have platforms and bridges that attach directly to your walls, giving your feline lots of space to engage in natural play.
WALKS
Just like your dog, cats can be taught to walk on a leash. The younger you start them on a leash, the easier it will be for both you and your cat. Be sure to have your cat fitted for a harness, and never attach a leash directly to the collar. Your cat will enjoy afternoon hikes or a simple stroll around the neighbourhood. Always attach a tag on their collar with your information should your cat escape, and be sure your pet is microchipped.

SPAY AND NEUTER
BUDDY SYSTEM
Always spay and neuter your pet. Intact cats can be driven by hormones to try to escape outside to find a mate. By spaying and neutering, you eliminate this added stress on your cat, while at the same time minimizing the allure of the outdoors and eliminating any chance that it could contribute to the unwanted cat population. In additon, intact males will often spray urine to mark their territory. Neutering your male cat while it’s young will stop this issue.
There is nothing better than having a friend to play with, so consider adopting a second cat. Not only will they keep each other company, you’ll be giving a better life to a shelter cat. Ensure they have compatible personalities, and introduce them slowly to avoid fights that could cause injuries. Adopting two kittens, even litter mates, will give them a great start.
GROOMING
Cats are pretty good at grooming themselves unless they feel unwell or are overweight. A healthy, fit cat will groom itself throughout the day, and if your cat has a scratching post, they will be able to keep their claws at a good length. Long-haired cats should be brushed regularily to avoid matting, which can cause painful sores as the matted hair pulls on the tender skin. Claws should be trimmed as required to avoid snagging nails and causing injuries.
TOYS AND PLAY
REGULAR VET VISITS
Just like dogs, cats like to engage in play, and there is a plethora of toys to keep them active. Have a variety of toys on hand—toys for solitary play and those you can use to play with your cat—a good choice will keep your cat interested.
Keep your cat up to date with vaccines, and arrange for regular visits to the vet. This is especially important as your cat gets older. You may not notice your cat is feeling unwell, and illnesses can progress quickly if not properly treated. Schedule a trip to the veterinarian at least twice a year. This is the perfect time to treat for internal and external parasites.
LOVE
Cats are known for their independence and aloof personalities, but they still need to be loved and cuddled to create a bond with you. Besides, it’s impossible not to love them!
