PEI’s beautiful homes show off the Island’s architecture, homeowners’ good taste, and local decorators’ talents. But another helping hand behind Island interiors is home supply businesses and furniture providers like Summerside Home Furniture. Summerside Home Furniture is an offshoot of Callbecks Home Hardware, a PEI family business dating to 1899. Since the business opened, its consistency has stood out; many employees have over a decade of experience, and the store has carried flagship brands such as Decor-Rest and GE for just as long.
“We’re really the only Island company that has a hardware and supply store, as well as a furniture and appliance store,” notes owner and manager David Macdonald. “If you’re building a home, we can assist you from the foundation up at Callbecks Home Hardware. Then, when your home’s finished, Summerside Home Furniture can supply appliances, furniture and home decor.” Ashley, Canadel, Springwall and Sealy are among Summerside Home Furniture’s furniture and mattress brands. One brand that’s front and centre at the Wyatt Crescent store is Decor-Rest: “We’re a gallery store for them,” Macdonald says. Decor-Rest is perfectly suited to homeowners hunting specific furniture designs or styles within a selective
palette. A number of Decor-Rest designs can be finished in custom fabric; the Decor-Rest fabric wall at Summerside Home Furniture displays these options, allowing customers an opportunity to spend time comparing woods and fabric colours. “They’re nice, big fabric samples that can give you a great idea of how a piece of furniture will look when it arrives,” explains Macdonald, adding that customers can also order throw pillows covered with the same textiles. For homeowners seeking good workmanship, appliance brands can be trickier to cross-compare than furniture. Fortunately, when it comes to appliances, Summerside Home Furniture’s loyalties are clear.
