The Thin Red Line B y F lorence N ye W h itwell "Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the w i n d o w Joshua 2 :18. AWRENCE shut the door of his room very quietly.. Nobody in the nearly empty corridor of the college dormitory would know that he was there. He had two letters in his hand, both addressed to him. He had found them in his mail box on his way in. That was why he had instantly hushed the shrill whistle with which he generally sprang up the stairs—more than one at a time ! That was why he had shut the door of his room very quietly. These were no ordinary missives. He wished to be alone for a little. In the upper left-hand corner of one envelope were embossed in a very special way two masks—Comedy and Tragedy. And under them were the words, “The Merry makers.” Lawrence recognized it. It was the stationery of the University dramatic organization to which only the chosen few of the campus belonged. Lawrence Haworth, Esq., Bidlake Hall, he read on its elegant surface. The other—what a contrast ! His throat contracted slightly as he savored it. The cheaper paper with its printed—not engraved ¡—announcement, “If not delivered within five days, return to the University Evangelistic As sociation,” and underneath this the bit of fine scarlet thread which he, as one who had been occasionally to their meetings, recognized as signifying “the thin red line” ! The name these lads loved to give themselves ! Why ? Be cause, they had told him, it recalled the line let down from Rahab’s window, and the crimson strand woven in and out of the whole Book of God from cover to cover, from Genesis to Calvary and on to Patmos, and the final vision of “Him that loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood.” And then Donald Donaldson of the Cameron Clan had spoken up with many a rolling “r ” from his corner where his auburn locks shone like an oriflamme, and said that his forebears had fought against a foe stronger than they, and had prevailed because of a faith that made famous their thin red line of kilted heroes. And this had rather fired some of the young blood present at this early meeting of the Evangelistic Association, and so the emblem had been adopted. What did they want of him ? He did not much care to look. A good lot of kids but hobbledehoys, most of them. Small time was there for the amenities in their earnest lives. No ! “The Merrymakers” beckoned !
