And What You Can Do to Prevent It Sleep Apnea

Snoring throughout the night isn’t as harmless as some people may think. Often, it’s a symptom of a critical health concern: sleep apnea. “Apnea” is a Greek word that means “without breath.” People with sleep apnea will experience an obstruction in their airway, which leads to a halting of breath for short periods of time while they are asleep. Sleep apnea is comprised of three different types: obstructive, central, and mixed. Obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA, is the most common form found in individuals. In each type, the sleeper will wake repeatedly during the night because their brain arouses them to ensure the body can continue to breathe. There are many people with sleep apnea who do not realize it because they are never fully awoken through the night. Not only does this condition cause restless sleep in a patient, it’s also a major contributing factor to heart disease. Individuals with sleep apnea have elevated blood pressure, which is a key risk factor for heart disease and strokes. The person may go days, weeks, months, or even years without a full night’s rest, causing the body to slowly deteriorate. The outcome of sleep loss can

result in serious health concerns and premature death. Sleep deprivation can have negative effects on the function of your brain, increasing stress hormones and leading to depression. Traditionally, sleep apnea is treated with CPAP, a device that’s worn on the face. CPAP, or Continuous Positive Air Pressure, feeds a continuous stream of air into the patient’s nose or mouth throughout the night. This allows air to pass unobstructed into the body, giving the person uninterrupted sleep. However, many people find this device uncomfortable or frustrating. Luckily for them, there are other options available! Jones Smiles offers a custom oral appliance — a small acrylic device that fits over the upper and lower teeth. This appliance gently realigns your tongue and jaw to open your airway, allowing more airflow to the lungs while you sleep. Even if you only have mild sleep apnea, being fitted with an oral appliance can result in the reduction or even cessation of snoring.
