@GroganHorses

Dear Friends,

I am deeply honored to lead Colorado State University’s Legends of Ranching program, a premier experiential learning opportunity in the equine industry. This program provides our students with unparalleled hands-on experience in horse training, stable management, marketing, advertising, and event production— preparing them to become the next generation of industry leaders. The success of Legends of Ranching is a testament to the unwavering support of our faculty, staff, students, sponsors, and consignors. Their dedication and hard work make our annual sale possible, and I am incredibly grateful for their contributions. This year, we are proud to present twenty young horses from eleven distinguished ranches, including a new addition to our program—Phipps Land & Livestock. We are also offering a diverse selection of outside horses, featuring consignments from Silver Spur Ranches, Perry Quarter Horses, and more. Whether you are looking for a young prospect or a seasoned partner, I am confident this year’s sale will have something for everyone.

Diamond Land & Livestock

I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Purina for their generous support of our program. From sponsoring our consignor dinner to supplying feed for our horses and providing two outstanding young horses for our students to train, Purina’s contributions are invaluable. I also want to recognize Cinch Jeans for their ongoing commitment to our students, providing both apparel and thousands of dollars in scholarships that directly impact their education and future careers. At the core of Legends of Ranching—and CSU Equine Sciences— are our students. They are the future of the equine industry, and we are committed to fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment where students from all backgrounds can thrive. One of my favorite parts of this role is selecting the cover photo for our annual sale catalog. This year, I turned to Rachel Hirschi at 35 Select Stock, and after some back-and-forth—debating options that were too editorial, the wrong orientation, or just not quite right— she sent me a photo that stopped me in my tracks. The raw, gritty power it captured was undeniable. While our program is named for the historic titans of the ranching industry, it is the broodmares that are the true legends—the foundation upon which our herds, and this industry, are built. Thank you for supporting the Legends of Ranching program. We are excited for another incredible sale and look forward to seeing the impact our students will make in the equine world.

GO RAMS!

BAR ROCK-N-BEAN QUARTER HORSES 14339 WCR 74 • EATON, CO 80615 • (970) 590 – 5551

Bar Rock-N-Bean Quarter Horses is located near Eaton, Colorado, and was established by Todd Bean. Todd, an alumnus of Colorado State University, attended and played football from 1987 to 1991 and has kept ties with CSU over the years. Particularly, the Beans have participated in the Legends of Ranching Sale annually and have been overly impressed with the quality of consignments as well as the teamwork of the students in the Equine Science Program. The Bar Rock-N-Bean breeding program is built on the foundation of prolific sires such as AQHA Super Horse Real Gun, and NCHA and NRCHA All-Time Leading Sires Playgun and Peptoboonsmal. The daughters and granddaughters of these superior stallions were selected for the breeding operation because they offer great minds, good bone, and sound feet. The ranch’s goal is to produce well- minded, athletic, and versatile horses that can excel in a variety of performance disciplines and environments. Both of the ranch’s consigned horses are sired by Quail Hunter, also known as “Hooch". Bred by the Four Sixes Ranch, the grandson of Paddys Irish Whiskey is out of one of Harry Haythorn’s outstanding mares. The stallion was purchased by Todd Bean in 2008 and has made substantial contributions to the Bar Rock-N-Bean program with his size, conformation, and incredible disposition.

Nestled in the Western Sandhills of Nebraska, BOXO Quarter Horses is owned and operated by Cash and Jecca Ostrander, who are dedicated to breeding and raising honest workhorses that can excel in both the show pen and out on the ranch. Both Cash and Jecca live within 50 miles of their birthplace, and these strong ties to the land are evident every day in the Angus cows and quality Quarter Horses they produce. The couple have three children, one of whom, Stetson, still lives and works on the ranch with his wife Courtney, daughter Tenley and son Jensen. BOXO Quarter Horses have been a part of the AQHA Ranching Heritage Program since it was established in 2011 and support the program as a donor to the AQHA Ranching Heritage Youth Horse Development Program. Hardy Performance Horses makes its home at Cusker, Inc. in Montana. Its goal is to produce horses that can perform at home on the ranch, or in the rodeo arena. Horses are bred with an eye on speed, disposition, balance, and movement. We currently stand 2 stallions; Zan N Chex (AQHA, Zan N Me x Lenas Bouncing Chex by Night Deposit Chex) and Image Will Call (APHA, Suchanimage x Call Me Amy Gray by Call Me Together). Cusker, Inc. is located in the northeast corner of Montana on the south bank of the Missouri River below Fort Peck Dam. The ranch is home to a cow-calf operation, a broodmare band of 30, & a remuda of 20-30 yearlings & saddle horses. It uses the hay & small grains it raises to support its herds during the winter. Hank Cusker, the ranch patriarch, worked for several large ranches in the area gathering remount horses for the cavalry before breaking off on his own. Eventually, 2 of Hank’s boys, Ray and Jay, took over the operations. Ray Cusker’s oldest daughter Rita and her husband Mark guided the ranch through the drought & farm crisis of the 1980s. Now 2 of their children, Quinn & Vanessa, are operating the ranch. Conservation is a key principle to pass the ranch from generation to generation on the short grass prairie. Rotational grazing, water conservation, & wildlife management practices are being continually updated and improved to pass the ranch and its heritage to the 5th generation. Our mares are foaled in northeast Montana on green grass & stay there until weaning time. We think it’s important that the foals know how to get up and down real hills. Horses are marketed as weanlings, yearlings, 2-year-olds, and some are made into ranch horses or arena horses & sold later. We are excited to be a part of the 2025 Legends of Ranching Sale. HAYTHORN RANCH COMPANY 25497 E. HAYTHORN RD • MAXWELL, NE 69151 • (308) 520 – 4017 Haythorn Ranch company is located in the Sandhills of Nebraska along the Platte River Valley, near the town of Maxwell. It is comprised of 20,000 acres of grass, meadow hay, and sweet water from the Ogallala Aquifer and is primarily a cow-calf operation, running up to 1,500 head. The Haythorn Legacy began more than 135 years ago when a 16- year-old Harry Haythornthwaite, later shortened to Haythorn stowed away on a ship bound for the US and when discovered was forced to pay for his passage by taking care of some white-faced bulls headed for Galveston, Texas. Upon arrival, he was hired by the man who imported the bulls and for the next eight years learned what it took to be a cowboy. He made multiple trips up the Texas trail where he found the Great Plains to his liking and opened a livery stable in Ogallala, Nebraska and later married Emma Gilpin. The couple filed on a land grant section four miles east of Arthur, Nebraska, and an American ranching dynasty was born. Entering its 6th generation of traditional ranching, the Haythorn Ranch Company has been breeding American Quarter Horses since before the registry’s inception in 1940. They are the 2009 recipient of the AQHA Best Remuda Award. Currently, the ranch breeds 15 to 25 mares a year and runs 20 to 40 saddle horses on their Bermuda pastures. These horses are bred to have good bones and feet, plenty of muscle, and a kind disposition with lots of cow sense. Their horses are versatile and can be used by a wide variety of people for anything that can be done horseback.

35 SELECT STOCK

P.O.BOX 14910 • JACKSON, WY 83002 • (208) 360– 4050

Jed and Rachel Rose Hirschi invested 16 dedicated years of their lives working alongside Dr. H.B. “Woody” Bartlett at the illustrious Bartlett Ranch nestled in southeastern Wyoming. The passing of Doc in 2021 marked the end of his esteemed “Flying B” horse breeding legacy, as his legendary herd was dispersed. In the wake of this transition, Jed, Doc’s esteemed head cowboy, was bequeathed the pick of the litter: 35 mares and two studs, a treasure trove that birthed the esteemed 35 Select Stock. Among the myriad of American Quarter Horse breeding establishments across the United States, none rival the sheer mare power that Doc entrusted to Jed. These horses, boasting Flying B bloodlines, continue to stand as a testament to the epitome of quality, meticulously nurtured in accordance with Doc’s lifelong practices, principles, and visionary pursuits. Through the stewardship of 35 Select Stock, we pay homage to Doc’s memory, ensuring it endures through the grace and grandeur of these magnificent animals. Doc’s legacy is deeply intertwined with his passion for the American Quarter Horse breed. His crowning achievement was securing the prestigious AQHA Best Remuda Award in 2016, a testament to his unwavering commitment to excellence. Doc's affinity for horses was palpable in every facet of his life, whether he was saddling up his cherished “Little Cat,” traversing vast pastures in his Chevy while admiring his latest foal crop, or soaring above his herd in his plane. As each foaling season unfolds and we brand our newborns with the iconic “Flying 35,” we pay tribute to the indomitable spirit of a man who found his truest joy amidst the noble presence of his beloved horses. Perry Quarter Horses PO BOX 265 LEOTI KS 67861 • (970) 481 – 5742

GUEST CONSIGNOR

Perry Quarter Horses of Leoti, Kansas, is a 42-year AQHA breeding program based on our family’s four-generation cow/calf and farming operation. Additionally, we became an AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeder in 2011. As ranchers, we know how vital a great horse is for humane cattle handling. Those essential ranch horse qualities— brains, talent, stamina, soundness, and trainability—are the baseline for our breeding program. Owner/Trainer Jason Perry got his start as a trainer in 1990 at a Ray Hunt Clinic and never looked back. Over the last 35 years, he has over 10,000 colt starts, trained and shown horses in Reined/Working Cow Horse, Versatility Ranch Horse, many types of roping, ranch rodeos, and several other events, including Polo and Dressage. You will find very few trainers with his depth of knowledge. Our broodmare band is an eclectic mix of older foundation lines (Doc O Lena, Ranch Colonel, Sky High Leo, and Flying X Six) and modern cow horse blood. Our three stallions (sons of Bet Hesa Cat, Once In A Blue Boon, and Jackpot Cat) were all purchased unstarted, so Jason could do all training and showing, thoroughly vetting them before they were allowed to breed any mares. They all have earnings in NRCHA, AQHA VRH, and several other events. At Perry Quarter Horses, we pride ourselves on offering quality over quality and putting the horse first. To do this, we keep our program small, so each horse gets the personal attention they deserve. We raise our youngsters in a pasture so they can grow as nature intended. We hope that makes them stronger and a little wiser in the long run. While the two horses we are offering in this sale are only two-year-olds, we hope their foundation is enjoyed for a lifetime.
