The Preparatory School (incorporating a Nursery) and Senior Girls’ School are centrally located together in West London, close to Hammersmith and Kensington Olympia, whilst the Senior Boys’ School is located in Ashford, Surrey. About Us

St James School was founded in January 1975. It was inspired by the desire of a number of parents who wanted to offer their own children and the children of future generations a different education to that available at the time. These parents were philosophically inclined and had come to value the importance of an education which provided spiritual enrichment as well as what could be described as the best of a traditional English education; a rigorous education steeped in the classical tradition and offering the best of artistic and academic culture. The aim was that the doors of the school should be open to all children and fees should be kept as low as possible in order to avoid having to turn people away for financial reasons. Our approach to academic study begins with the understanding that within every boy there is a brilliance and perfection waiting to be uncovered. Pupils at St James are not selected solely on their academic ability; strength of character and future potential are also of equal significance. Over the past five years we have achieved a 100% pass rate in both GCSE and A Level examinations with more than 90% of pupils achieving the top grades. The list of universities that our senior boys join makes for impressive reading. Our Senior Boys’ School is located in a beautiful 32 acre site in Ashford Surrey, which provides space for our students to pursue arts, drama and sport. It also allows our extensive extra-curricular activities to take place, these include: Cadets, The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, Sailing Club, Mountain Biking, Climbing, Kayaking, to name but a few. Bursar: Job Description

The Bursar will have responsibility for the: • Management of all school premises, facilities, site management, catering, cleaning, transport, contract management and all service arrangements. • Management of relevant support and administrative staff. • Coordination of all the school policies; ensuring stakeholders have completed them and that they are up to date. • Management of Health & Safety to ensure relevant policies and procedures, required by law, are in place and delivered effectively. Membership of the School Leadership Team • Be an active member of the School Leadership Team (SLT). • Ensure that aspects of the School’s Development Plan and its targets are delivered efficiently and to best value. • Monitor and implement policies and procedures to ensure all legislative and regulatory requirements are adhered to. • Work with SLT colleagues to promote the efficient and effective use of resources. • Keep the Chief Operating Officer fully up-to-date and informed about all allocated areas of responsibility, and report any significant problems as appropriate and within a reasonable timeframe. Finance • Prepare individual school budget bids for Board consideration. • Manage individual school and site budgets. • Oversee the preparation of financial reports, and work with the Chief Operating Officer to monitor expenditure against budget reporting.

Summary

Supporting the Chief Operating Officer in managing the day-to-day operational aspects of the Sen - ior Boys’ School (Ashford, Surrey). Working with the Head to ensure effective management of the school’s operations. Part-time 52-week contract: 7.45-12.00 (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday) and 12.15-16.30 on Wednesday

Main Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Bursar will ensure the effective management of the school’s operational services. The post holder will advise the Chief Operating Officer on the effective implementation of Health and Safety policies, and exercise financial and quality control over all aspects of the school Opera - tions

• Manage and monitor contracts for the supply of goods and services, including insurance arrangements and contracts for build projects. • dentify and manage the generation of income, by external use of the School assets when they are not otherwise required.

Estates & Domestic Services • Lead and manage the operational function.

• You will contribute to the ongoing development of plans for the maintenance, refurbishment and construction of buildings; providing expert opinion regarding services and condition of the existing estate. • Maintain an oversight of all major services and supplies to the schools, and carry out periodic reviews that should include consideration of outsourcing arrangements. • Oversee the necessary out of hours cover to ensure that the school is able to operate with the minimum disruption, responding as appropriate to emergency situations during and/or out- side of normal working hours; co-ordinating the response to emergency callouts using direct works, trades or contractors as appropriate. • Implement site security solutions; covering building access restrictions, CCTV coverage, and barriers around the site. • The management of the Health and Safety Policy and training to ensure the Schools comply with all current legislation in relation to site safety, facilities management, and maintenance. • Responsible for ensuring that there is an up-to-date Recovery and Continuity plan (including an Emergency Management plan) in place. • Monitoring the school’s energy use, management and conservation; investigating and implementing means of improving energy efficiency. • Supervision of the maintenance and safe use of the minibuses. Health & Safety • Support the Head with managing Health and Safety at the school. • Chair the H&S Sub-committee. • Follow the Schools’ Health and Safety Policy. • Arrange the annual Health and Safety Audit with the school’s H&S consultant. • Work closely with the Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSL) and keep up-to-date with any issues, concerns, or changes in policy. • Conduct investigations for RIDDOR related accidents and incidents, where appropriate. Management of Support Staff • Manage the work of the school’s support staff and ensure that efficient systems are in place for the effective operation of the school. • Lead and support the professional development of the support and administrative staff. • Undertake the recruitment and selection of support staff, in accordance with the School’s policies and procedures. • Play a key role within the SLT for the support staff structure and the performance management of all support staff. Commercial & Events • Support the Commercial Events Manager’s programme of letting of the school’s facilities, and ensure that their use is maximised with a view to generating additional income across the schools. • Supervision of the renting of accommodation to the schools’ employees. This may occasionally include third party rentals.

Person Specification

• A minimum of a degree level qualification (or equivalent), ideally with a professional qualification in finance, management or property. • Business experience with the knowledge of commercial and allied subjects adequate for the management of the day-to-day affairs of the School. • A proven track record of successfully leading, developing and managing people, with first class communication skills, interpersonal and dispute resolution skills, and experience and knowledge of project management. • Proven ability to maintain tight financial control on operational programmes. • Evidence of an understanding and commitment to Health & Safety. • Ability to work unsupervised, use own initiative and manage own time. • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to liaise confidently with contractors, academic and support staff, visitors and the general public. • A willingness to be adaptable, flexible and to work unsociable hours as sometimes required by the job. • Demonstrable leadership abilities, with a good eye for detail, and the ability to prioritise, motivate and delegate to staff. • A positive “can do” attitude, with the ability to analyse and evaluate complex issues and provide appropriate solutions. • Experience of working in an educational setting desirable but not essential.

Part-time Hours : 07.45 to 12:00 (Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri) and 12.15 to 16.30 (Wed). There may be requirements in busy periods during term time to work additional hours. Holidays : 15 days (pro rata to the full time equivalent of 30) plus Bank Holidays – to be taken in normal school holiday periods.
