PCG: Continuous Improvement, Performance, Profits and Growth BY LEN PRAZYCH How big is too big? How much growth is too much growth? And if you continue to build it— “it” being an even bigger, more modern box plant filled with cutting-edge machinery and continuous improvements—will customers continue to come? According to Larry Grossbard, co-owner and co-president of Mid- dletown, New York-based President Container Group (PCG), the an- swer is a definitive yes. Speaking during a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the company’s third MHIA Evol, Grossbard reaffirmed PCG’s ambi-

Sonoco To Implement $70 Per Ton Price Increases On URB
Hartsville, South Carolina based Sonoco Products Com- pany announced it is implementing a $70 per ton price increase for all grades of uncoated recycled paperboard (URB) in the US and Canada effective on April 10. John Florence, General Counsel, Industrial Paper Packaging North America, said the increase is the result of continued inflation and tight market conditions: “Sono- co is committed to continuously improving our product offerings and pricing strategies to serve our customers better. As part of this commitment, we are realigning to value-based pricing and transitioning away from offering old, corrugated container price mechanisms, which are not true reflections of our overall value and cost to serve customers. This change more accurately reflects current market conditions and the value of our products and ser- vice offerings while ensuring the sustainability of our oper- ations,” Florence said. Sonoco said it will also increase prices for all converted paperboard products by a minimum of 8 percent, begin- ning with shipments starting April 15. This includes paper- board tubes, cores, cones, partitions, and more.

NAM: Trade Policies Shake Up Manufacturers’ Economic Outlook Manufacturers are increasingly worried about the future of trade and rising raw material costs, according to the Q1 2025 National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) Manu- facturers’ Outlook Survey. In the most recent survey, trade uncertainties moved to the top of the list of manufacturers’ concerns—with 76.2 percent of respondents citing them as their primary worry. Increased raw material costs came in second, cited by 62.3 percent of those surveyed. Manufacturers expect prices on their companies’ prod- uct lines to go up by 3.6 percent in the next year, an in- crease from 2.3 percent in Q4 2024 and the highest since Q3 2022, when inflation was more than 8 percent. Manu- facturers also anticipate the cost of raw materials and other

inputs to rise 5.5 percent in the next year, the highest ex- pected rate of increase since Q2 2022, when inflation was between 8 percent and 9 percent. Manufacturers also feel strongly that their businesses need the “rocket fuel” of the tax reform extension. If Con- gress fails to extend pro-manufacturing provisions of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017: • 69.35 percent of respondents said they would delay capital equipment purchases; • 45.23 percent would delay hiring; • 44.72 percent would pause operations expansions; • 41.71 percent would limit R&D investment; and • 40.20 percent would curb employee wages or benefits increases. “The pressure of increased costs, trade instability and sluggish demand is dampening the sector’s momentum, making it more difficult for manufacturers to plan, invest and hire,” NAM President and CEO Jay Timmons wrote in a social post. “We are calling for a comprehensive manufac- turing strategy that includes a commonsense trade policy in addition to making President Trump’s 2017 tax reforms permanent and more competitive, securing regulatory cer- tainty, expediting permitting reform to unleash American energy dominance and key manufacturing projects and in- creasing the talent pool.”

ND Paper Announces PM 25 Restart At Biron, WI Mill Oak Brook, Illinois based ND Paper an- nounced plans to re-start PM 25 at its Bi- ron, Wisconsin based mill. This machine was idled in April of 2024. With the successful conversion of PM 26 at Biron to recycled packaging and the grow- ing demand for ND Paper’s packaging products, the company said it is pleased to add the capacity of PM 25 back to its portfolio. The machine was rebuilt in 2019 and will be capable of making recycled con- tainerboard and recycled kraft paper. This will add additional capacity to the exist- ing recycled packaging product portfolio when the machine starts up in the second half of 2025. ND Paper currently offers 30#-70# Re- cycled Kraft, 23#-35# Recycled Liner and Recycled Medium. The 100 percent recy- cled furnish is supplied by a newly built 1,400-ton OCC pulping facility and a newly built 700-ton OCC pulping facility. The mill has made recycled packaging since PM 25 was converted from coated publication papers in 2018. PM 26 was converted from coated publication papers in 2022. Biron has established itself as a reliable, quality producer in packaging grades, the company said, and adding the capacity of PM 25 back to the system will provide the ability to serve more custom- ers its breadth of products.

Redefining Packaging: How Innovation, AI, Sustainability Are Shaping The Future BY THE PAPERBOARD PACKAGING COUNCIL The packaging industry is evolving faster than ever, driven by sustainabil- ity demands, AI-powered advancements, and a shift away from plastics. As brands race to adapt, designers are at the forefront—creating solu- tions that balance aesthetics, functionality, and environmental responsi- bility. To dive deeper into these trends, we spoke with Emma Wingerd, Designer, Beverage North America at Smurfit Westrock. From plastic-free innovations to AI-driven automation, Emma shares how the industry is pushing boundaries and what’s next for paperboard packaging. From Industrial Design to Packaging Innovation Emma’s journey into paperboard packaging began with a background in industrial design and graphic design, but she quickly found her pas- sion in structural packaging. At Smurfit Westrock, she focuses on devel- oping new die lines and packaging solutions that meet the needs of both brands and consumers.
• Only standard hand tools are required for all maintenance • Direct drive with no chains or sprockets • No tools for media change required » just zip it up » media change out in minutes • Filter is accessible for visual inspection during operation, Significant Advantages Over Conventional Dust Filtration Technology
» no shutdown required • Filter media advantages - high dust collection efficiency
- low pressure loss due to constant deep cleaning of the filter media in minutes - long service life
What excites her most? The growing demand for plastic alternatives and the role packaging design plays in reducing fossil-based materials. “Consumer preferences and expectations, along with regulatory and legislative compliance, are guiding brands to explore possibilities in fos- sil-free packaging,” Emma explains. “This shift opens doors for compa- nies to act on sustainability initiatives and ultimately creates exciting op- portunities for innovation.” Cutting-Edge Design Trends In the past year, Emma has seen major shifts in how packaging is designed — especially in the beverage sector. “I’m most excited to see more paperboard-based solutions replacing plastic in stores, like clips for PET bottles and wraps for cans, which were traditionally packaged in plastic rings or shrink film,” she says. Seeing these innovations not just in industry news but in her own shopping cart reinforces the real-world impact of these advancements. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is also beginning to play a role in packaging design, albeit gradually. Rather than directly designing cartons, AI is en- hancing quality control and automation. Emma points to machine-learning camera detection in packaging lines, which ensures that defective prod- ucts are properly identified and removed—particularly for locked-bottom wraps like ClusterPaks. that were originally developed for plastics. “It’s important to advocate for test methods that accurately reflect con- sumer experiences, since using traditional benchmarks can potentially lead to over-engineered or rejected de- signs,” Emma emphasizes. Looking ahead, she predicts that the next big trend in paperboard packaging will be hybrid solutions—clever combinations of paperboard and plastic that significantly reduce plastic content while ensuring that packaging com- ponents remain easy to separate for recycling. While the end goal is fully fossil-free packaging, these intermediate steps are critical for industry progress. Advice For Emerging Designers Emma’s advice to up-and-coming packaging design- ers? Stay curious. She encourages designers to: • Explore new packaging solutions in stores • Engage with professionals in related fields like graphic design, marketing, and automation • Learn new software and tools to stay ahead of industry advancements As the industry continues to evolve, Emma looks for- ward to tackling the more complex challenges of plastic replacement, finding creative ways to develop packaging solutions that are both functional and sustainable. The insights shared by Emma highlight the dynam- ic and rapidly changing landscape of packaging design. As brands continue to push for innovation, efficiency, and
Balancing Aesthetics with Sustainability One of the biggest challenges brands face is balancing visual appeal with sustainability goals. Smurfit Westrock is tackling this challenge with material innovations, such as GlisterKote, a printed silver coating that creates a metallic effect without laminates or foils. Another major advancement is the ability to align primary packaging with paperboard formats using ma- chine-learning technologies. With solutions like CanCollar and PETCollar Fortuna, brands can ensure that primary containers are always facing forward, turning the product itself into an ad panel while reducing material use. Additionally, recyclability remains a top focus, with brands simplifying their packaging by reducing components and moving toward monomaterials to improve recovery rates. Consumer Engagement & Future Of Smart Packaging Digital packaging technologies, such as QR codes and augmented reality (AR), are bridging the gap between physical and digital experiences. Emma notes that these tools allow brands to provide detailed product information, promotions, and interactive brand experiences directly from packaging—ultimately strengthening customer loyal- ty and engagement. Challenges In The Industry & What’s Next One of the biggest challenges facing fiber-based pack- aging designers today is evolving from testing standards

Do you need printed sheets? We have your answer.. Introducing Heartland’s ColorCorr. This is “flexo-printing in the round”. On our corrugator we can print up to 109” wide. The advantage is that we can print the equivalent of ½ roll at a time and not be required to keep several rolls of very expensive preprinted paper on the floor. Much less waste and risk. In continual print mode, we use either laser-engraved rubber rolls or solid rubber rolls to print a “flood coat” or a repeating pattern. If we are printing a repeating pattern, we can run a two-color design on the paper. Customers have found that running sheets we print can allow them to run a lighter-grade due to reduced caliper loss, and in some cases eliminate one or more machine passes.

Stafford Partners With Policart On Red Anvil Covers
AIR CONVEYING CORPORATION is a recognized leader in the industry of Pneumatic Conveying Systems and has been in business since 1968. As an equipment manufacturer rather than simply a sales organization, we have complete control over the quality of material and products which make up your proposed system. Our equipment is found in Printing, Folding Carton and Corrugated plants throughout the country and the world.
Indian Trail, North Carolina based Stafford Corrugated Products has announced its new partnership with Policart, a leading manufacturer of red anvil covers. Stafford is now an official distributor of the Policart red anvil cover. The new relationship has elevated Stafford to become the in- dustry’s premiere supplier of anvil covers. “Stafford has long prided itself on choosing partners that bring maximum value to our customers, which is why
we are so pleased to have partnered with Policart,” says Tony D’Aprile, owner of Stafford Corrugated Prod- ucts. “More than ever before, we can offer our customers the best options for their operation. If keeping ma- chinery with that OEM look is par- amount to your operation, Stafford has you covered. If giving your older

equipment a fresh OEM feel is critical, Stafford has you covered. Regardless of your needs or what type of ma- chines you run, when it comes to anvil covers no one has you covered like Stafford Corrugated Products.” Stafford has been serving the corrugated industry since 1987 and in 2004 introduced the Rodicut Die Cut Anvil Cover, which allowed machine operators to install new an- vil covers in record-setting times. It made the process of anvil cover rotation quick and easy. The durable urethane covers, along with the unique self-locking feature and heavy-duty fiberglass backing, have allowed the demand to grow. They are now available in extra-wide and dou- ble-wide sizes, as well as standard 88 durometer green and extra hard 91 durometer orange. Many OEMs have started equipping their machines with red anvil covers and with its new partnership, Stafford can now add this product to its 100+ pages of offerings for the industry. “Our growth can be attributed to many different fac- tors,” adds D’Aprile. “The most important reason is that we listen. We listen to our customers when they ask if we can provide them with a specific product. We listen to our customers when they ask us if there is an alternative to the ‘status quo.’ It is the relationship with our customers that drives us to seek out new products, to improve our existing products and to allow our customers to focus on their goals, knowing they have a partner who truly has their backs.
