AUGUST 2024
Growing Together With You
As readers of this newsletter know, I sometimes get into trouble when I get so focused on a goal, like winning a case for a client or a staring contest with a bear, that I refuse to think about anything else. In recognition of Never Give Up Day on Aug. 18, I want to tell you a story about an especially hair-raising episode when I refused to give up. My wife, daughter, son, and I were visiting Marseille, France, during a European cruise — a gift for my daughter, who had just graduated from college, and my son, who had just graduated from high school. Marjorie had recently had back surgery, so we were taking it easy. We enjoyed lunch and stopped to buy some macarons, a colorful French cookie. Then Marjorie and I caught an Uber back to the ship while the kids left on a bicycle ride. Jammed into the Uber’s small back seat, I was juggling a bunch of packages and Marjorie’s purse, to spare her sore back, when I dropped my cellphone in the cab. I didn’t even realize it was missing until after the driver dropped us off at the ship. We looked everywhere and finally checked Find My Friends on Marjorie’s phone. To my dismay, I see my phone in the back of the Uber, and it’s taking off! Of course, I give chase! I see another Uber pulling into a spot nearby. I ask Marjorie for her phone and promise to keep in touch via the kids’ phones. Then I run to catch the cab. If you have ridden in an Uber in France, you know that few drivers speak English. And I, of course, know zero French. Pointing madly at Marjorie’s phone, I show the driver the location of my phone, then go to Google Translate to convey my message: We need to find that cab! Carmen Refuses to Give Up on a Wild Uber Ride MARSEILLE MADNESS
“Oh, no! No! Get in, get in!” the driver yells. And he takes off like a bat out of hell. Literally. This guy is flying through the streets. I notice he has a motorcycle helmet bouncing around on the front seat. Aha! This guy must be one of those daredevil motorcyclists in Europe known for driving like maniacs! Trying to stay stable in the back seat, I brace my hands against the doors and my feet against the front seat while holding my wife’s phone so he can see the location of my phone.
“Aeroport! Aeroport!” he yells. “Oh good!”
Meanwhile, he seems to be calling his boss. A lot of French words are flying back and forth. He’s probably saying, I have this dumb American in the car and he forgot his phone, and we’re chasing it. Meanwhile, my phone has stopped moving on the Find My Friends app, so I try calling it, in hopes that somebody will pick it up. Nobody does. We go racing into the airport and just as we’re ready to overtake the other Uber, it takes off! I show my driver and he starts yelling again. “Oh no, no, no!” We zip out of the airport in hot pursuit of the other Uber once again. Meanwhile, I am braced for impact in a pre-crash position in the back seat. I don’t know where the heck I am. I don’t speak the language. My wife doesn’t know what happened to me. I keep calling and texting my phone. Finally, somebody answers. I hand my wife’s phone to the driver, and he starts speaking French to the other driver. Finally, they agree on a rendezvous point, and the other Uber driver soon arrives — laughing

CRASH COURSE WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE IN AN ACCIDENT
Keep calm: Call 911 to report the accident. In Florida, you are required to have a Traffic Crash Report completed if the crash results in serious property damage, bodily injury, or death. Move your vehicle: If your vehicle is a hazard to other vehicles, move it out of the way if it is safe to do so. Avoid further injury: Turn off all cars involved. Don’t move anyone who may be injured unless they are in immediate danger. Find a safe place to stand away from the vehicles in case they are hit again. Avoid confrontation: The scene of a car crash is no place to argue with other drivers over who is at fault. It is best not to discuss how the accident happened. Wait for the police and obey their instructions. Exchange information: You should exchange driver’s license, registration, and insurance information with the other driver(s). Find witnesses: Even if the other driver admits fault, it is still helpful to obtain the names and phone numbers of as many witnesses as possible.
Take pictures and videos: We recommend that you take pictures and videos of the damage to your vehicle and the accident scene. Also, be sure to take pictures and videos of your injuries as soon as you get home and every day as the injuries progress/heal. Seek medical attention: If you experience even minor pain, you should seek medical attention right away. Remember, in Florida, you only have 14 days after your accident to seek treatment or you could waive your rights to a medical claim. Protect your rights: Although you generally must provide reasonable cooperation with your own insurance company’s investigation, the same is NOT true for the other parties’ insurance company. You are under no duty to cooperate with the other driver’s insurance company. Call us as soon as possible: You should consult an attorney before giving a statement to anyone, even your own insurance company. We have vast experience in handling auto accident cases. We care, and we will help you take all the appropriate steps to protect your rights and interests. Why settle for less?
We strongly suggest you read the following tips now and immediately place this guide in your vehicle’s glove compartment, in case you ever need it.

at me. His passengers are laughing too. I look like a ghost because I’ve been trapped in the back seat with this French version of Mario Andretti. Gratefully, I retrieve my phone and we take off. Now that our mad chase through Marseille is over, I expect this guy to take me back to the boat at a leisurely pace. But he immediately takes off twice as fast. This knucklehead must be late for a hot date, I’m thinking. After he drops me off at the ship and I walk back into our room, Marjorie is surprised. “I wasn’t expecting you for at least an hour,” she says. “I just had the craziest freaking ride in my life!” I tell her. Sadly, I learn that Marjorie and the kids have eaten all of the macarons. They didn’t even save me one! Were they good? I ask. “Wonderful!” the kids say, without a shred of guilt. “I have to go back and get a macaron,” I say. The kids just laugh, and tell me, “Only you, Dad. This could only happen to you.” This is my life.

TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL FIRST DAY OF CLASS With summer break tragically ending (as it does, sadly, every year), it is time to get back in the groove and prepare for the new school year. If you want to help your kids get over the first-day jitters and start out strong, employ these tips to make their first day back at class so successful that others will want to study it. Getting a Head Start According to research by the Center for Economic Security and Opportunity, students lose as much as 25%–30% of the knowledge they accumulated the previous school year over summer break. Reading and math skills are particularly affected and see the highest regression rate. And the higher the grade level, the more students are likely to forget. The best way to combat this summer slump is to keep learning. Reading books and practicing arithmetic at least three times a week will help kids maintain what they have previously worked so hard to learn. Shopping Spree Students also want to come to school prepared! Shopping for school supplies is a great way to get everything they need for the year ahead, Follow Us on Social Media! 4 Start Strong This Upcoming School Year Back to School
including a snazzy new outfit for the first day, notebooks, organizers, and favorite brands of pens and pencils. It’s also important to write names in notebooks to make them easier to identify if they end up in the lost and found! Mental Map No one likes getting lost. Whether returning to the same school as last year or heading into a new environment, finding one’s way can be daunting. If your kids arrive at school early, they can figure out where each class is and plot a path beforehand. Getting a feel for where they need to go throughout the day can be a great way to help them feel more prepared and comfortable. Many schools also have physical maps, which can be a great resource to store in a backpack if they ever feel lost.
