Youth winter sports on C-R election table gŏđŏ

editionap.ca

An alliance of winter youth recreation groups wants to know what candidates are seeking council seats in this month’s election are willing to do to protect ama- teur sport in the community. The Clarence CreekMinor Hockey Associa- tion, Clarence Creek Skating Club, Clarence- Rockland Girls Minor Hockey, Clarence- Rockland Ringette Club, Rockland Minor Hockey association, and the Rockland Ska- ting Club have all banded together to lobby

council candidates for support on youth recreation issues. “Over the past four years it has become obvious the majority of the current city council do not support subsidizing minor sports in Clarence-Rockland,” the group states in a press release. “Ice costs have more than doubled since the last election, program costs have increased accordingly, and registrations have dropped, up to 75 per cent in some cases.”

The six groups stated that they have all tried to keep their operating costs at a mini- mum and also lobbied city council “unsuc- cessfully” during the past term for help on ice rates and other needs. “The time has come,” the sports alliance stated, “where the citizens of Clarence- Rockland need to understand where each candidate stands with respect to promo- ting and supporting minor sports in Cla- rence-Rockland.” The group poses three questions to all the council and mayoral candidates in this month’s election. First is whether or not the City should support and promote amateur sports in the municipality and, if so, how, or if not, why not. Second, concerning ice costs at local are- nas, are council candidates willing to sup- port measures to offset these costs, inclu- ding restoring subsidies for minor sports groups that are having trouble stretching their operating budgets to cover those costs. The final question is whether or not

council candidates will support efforts by local sports groups to host tournaments which have “obvious economic benefits for Clarence-Rockland.” “Clarence-Rockland has the teams, ska- ters, facilities and talent to host successful tournaments and run effective programs for our children that make us all proud to call Clarence-Rockland home,” stated the alliance. “We would all appreciate the op- portunity to promote this great city but financially this is not feasible. Council needs to change its mind and opinion regarding sports in Clarence-Rockland.”

Daycare election issue

ROCKLAND | Less than a week left before Election Day and the union representing city workers is adding daycare service onto the issues table for Clarence-Rock- land council candidates. The Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 503 (CUPE) wants all 23 contenders for seats at council, including the two may- oral candidates, to tell voters what they will do to protect and improve the city’s day- care service. The Oct. 18 weekend marked the 40 th anniversary of municipal child care services in Clarence-Rockland. “There is a municipal election coming up,”

stated Brian Madden, CUPE Local 503 presi- dent, “and concerned residents and parents will be asking their councillors how they in- tend to protect and promote municipal day care in Clarence-Rockland.” Among the city workers the union repre- sents are all the early childhood education staff who man the nine municipal child care centres and are responsible for caring for 700 children while their parents are at work. There are concerns about recent changes to the provincial government’s shared fund- ing formula for child care services and how that will affect the local programs.
