MY VISION FOR A Drug-Free World

them to make that choice themselves. Research from the foundation shows that whenever kids are shown the truth about these dangerous substances, their drug usage drops dramatically. After all, young people get involved in drugs for various reasons. Maybe they’re struggling with complicated feelings and turn to drugs, imagining the substances will help them cope. Or maybe these young people just want to be like their friends; peer pressure is an incredibly powerful motivator. Either way, if kids

Beyond supporting the Foundation for a Drug-Free World financially, I’m working today to help them get the truth out to schools in and beyond the United States. We have everything teachers need to break down the myths of drug usage for their students, from lesson plans and public service announcements to workbooks. It’s vital that elementary students are brought on board with the project so this information can be spread to kids who are still young enough to listen and learn without bias. Whenever I can, I share information with parents in nearby parent-teacher organizations, trying to get them to see how valuable and worthwhile it is to introduce these concepts to their students. It’s a difficult battle fighting against drug pushers and their endless stores of resources and misinformation, but I’m confident that as our society continues to learn and grow and commit to a drug-free world, we can do incredible things both at home and abroad. If you have a child and are interested in equipping them with the tools to push back against the allure of illicit drugs, I’d encourage you to check out DrugFreeWorld.org and see for yourself what you can do to help.

Ever since I was little, I’ve been passionate about making the world we live in a better place. Over the years, I’ve become involved in all kinds of advocacy and volunteer organizations, each striving to make a difference and shift the paradigm in a positive direction. But of all the volunteer work I do, there are few organizations closer to my heart than the Foundation for a Drug- Free World and their Truth About Drugs campaign. With a vision for eradicating illicit drug use and its associated criminality, the foundation is particularly geared toward teaching children the harsh reality of drug use. Instead of wagging fingers and dogmatically declaring, “Don’t do drugs,” the foundation seeks to give children abundant research that shows the dangers of drug use, and it allows

and teens knew the reality of the situation they were getting themselves into, very few of them would become involved with these illicit substances. If you go to DrugFreeWorld.org, you can see the abundance of educational materials the organization has prepared, including

the pamphlets and videos they’ve created with an aim to educate the public. Today, these materials are disseminated and utilized in over 120 countries worldwide. They’re used in households, police departments, and schools so that kids everywhere can learn the truth and avoid getting involved in drugs.

Our Experienced Registered Dental Assistant MEET DONNA RAMIEREZ

When Donna Ramierez joined the team as a registered dental assistant back in 2014, she came on board with 18-plus years of pediatric dental experience and more than two decades of experience as an RDA. Almost immediately, the breadth of her skill set — and her naturally friendly and kind personality — made her absolutely indispensable around the office. For Donna, everything comes down to the patient. “I love working with my patients,” she says. “It’s really a pleasure being able to give them the instructions, education, and tools they need to foster lifelong health.” She appreciates the collaborative atmosphere at Alborzi Orthodontics. Everybody works on the same team to provide the people we serve with the greatest treatment possible. And even after 25-plus years in the field, she loves learning new things. “We get a ton of education here at the

office,” she says. “Dr. Alborzi is passionate about keeping us up to speed on all the latest trends, strategies, and technologies so we can better treat our patients. Even though we’re one of the most high-tech practices in the country, we’re always looking for new ways to push the envelope.” In fact, Donna is currently heading up a total revamp of our office’s technological capabilities and figuring out new ways to stay at the highest level of service. Outside of the clinic, Donna loves to create things of all kinds. From painting on wood and glass to sewing and complex needlepoint work, she’s always busy with one project or another. “It’s a lot of fun to make things,” she says. “In some ways, it’s like my therapy.” At any rate, we’re just thrilled to have someone as experienced and passionate about her work as Donna Ramierez. If you see her around the clinic, make sure to say hello!

At Alborzi Orthodontics, we pride ourselves on building a team of only the most experienced, skilled, and talented orthodontic experts. WHY YOUR CHILD SHOULD SEE AN ORTHODONTIST ASAP THE IMPORTANCE OF EARLY EVALUATION Many parents don’t think much about their young kids’ orthodontic

Luckily, patients at Alborzi Orthodontics can undergo an early evaluation completely free of charge. We take a close look at your child’s jaw and facial development to decide whether we can assist their natural growth patterns with orthodontics. This way, we can help create space and allow teeth to erupt in their correct positions. Not only can this save tons of money in orthodontic work later, it can even prevent surgical intervention in serious cases. If you have a young child who hasn’t been to see an orthodontist yet, there’s no time like the present. Give the experts at Alborzi Orthodontics a call at (650) 342-4171 today, and take the first step toward your child’s lifelong orthodontic health without spending a penny!

health. Though they schedule regular appointments with the dentist from an early age, the vast majority of parents wait until their children are in their early teens before bringing them into the orthodontist’s office for a checkup and to determine whether braces or Invisalign may be necessary. Here’s the problem: By this time, dental and facial development are much further along, which means any potential issues have already begun to set in. It can be much more difficult at this time to reverse the damage. Occasionally, experts have to recommend surgery to restructure a malformed jaw before the problem gets any worse. Though common wisdom may dictate that orthodontic health is mostly a concern for older patients, the American Association of Orthodontics recommends that children undergo an orthodontic evaluation at least once by the time they turn 7. This allows an orthodontist to determine whether early intervention may be necessary long before facial development has halted. This early evaluation is especially important for patients with malocclusion, impacted teeth, or non-optimum dentition. In many cases, treatment can probably wait. But if not, catching an issue early can save you hundreds of dollars, a lot of pain, and numerous health issues down the road.

Must-See Swimming Holes of the World PAGE 4

SECRET SWIMMING HOLES OF THE WORLD

Summertime is for swimming, but why settle for a community pool when you can have access to the most beautiful swimming locales in the world? These three exclusive, little-known spots are sure to take your breath away. HALI’I FALLS, HAWAII With its spiral staircase of waterfalls, this remote jungle location offers up more than one unique spot to take a plunge. Visitors never fail to be awestruck by the deep blue- green hue of each pool created by the four cascading waterfalls. Hali’i means “to spread out,” which is precisely what each waterfall does, showcasing a serene experience unlike any other. But the beauty of this one-of- a-kind experience is only outdone by its exclusivity. To reach these pools, you’ll have to hike through dense forest, deep marshes, and wide-open pastures of sugar cane.

DOS OJOS, MEXICO The Spanish translation of the name for this magical system of caves is “two eyes,” and you’ll want to have yours checked after you see this swimming hole. When limestone bedrock collapses, a sinkhole called a “cenote” is formed. The unearthed water from the natural aquifer balances a color palette of earth tones with the most majestic shades of blue you’ll ever behold. The calling cards for these bodies of water are the Blue Eye and the Black Eye. Both offer unforgettable experiences, but the price of entry is a hefty sense of adventure. You’ll need a full set of scuba gear to get to either hole. THE BATHS, VIRGIN GORDA A day in the Caribbean is like living every moment inside a beautiful pastel painting. The elegance of this location in the British

Virgin Islands will make you feel like you’ve been transported into a cathedral. The large boulders and natural rock formations create shallow caves that will captivate your eyes as you wade through the water in wonder. When you exit, you’ll witness the sight that gives this beautiful spot its name. A handful of 40-foot granite boulders form private pools as if that was what they were made for.
