a versatile, all-around man. He would be the last to say that it was by his might or genius that he accomplished what he did. His success cannot be understood until one is able to measure the man as he really was, his determination to be always right with God and men, his utter submission to the will of God, his prayer life and his life of quiet trust in God. Two new books are presented this month which make Dr. Torrey live be fore us again. Reuben Archer Torrey The Man . . . His Message By R obert H arkness This volume comes from the pen of Robert Harkness, who was intimately associated with Dr. Torrey in his world wide evangelistic campaigns. Having him self felt the touch of this mighty man of God upon his life, he is able to speak intelligently and sympathetically. He does not attempt to write a biography, but to give an interpretation of the man and the evangelist. The work is very well done. Published by The Bible Institute Col- portage Association. Price $1.00. The R. A. Torrey Year-Book By A. C hester M ann In this volume the preacher and teacher lives before us again. It gathers up choice bits from his best writings, especially such as are suitable for the devotional hour. They show the heart of the man as he lived in communion with his Lord. There is a definite, positive message in each quotation. If the book were to be com pared with other similar volumes, one

A Chosen Vessel “Many are called, but few are chosen.” —Matt. 22; 14. An alternative translation of this pas sage is, “Many are called but few are choice ones.” Such a reading intimates, among other things, that most men make no more than a passing impression, and that in a limited circle, upon their fellow men. That does not mean that a hidden disciple in an obscure corner is without influence, for there are spiritual forces available to the lowliest Christian by which he can “move the arm that moves the world.” But speaking in general terms, it doés signify that God chooses only choice men for places of prominence and leadership. His choice is not arbitrary nor does it disregard the human equation. The very idea of the expression “choice ones,” suggests special powers and talents, natural and spiritual, all held in submission to and under the constant control of the Lord who calls His servants. Dr. Torrey was such a “chosen vessel” —to use another figure. He was a man of giant intellect, splendidly trained; a tireless worker; a persistent soul-winner; a powerful preacher; an evangelist who has had many imitators but few equals j an incomparable Bible teacher—in short’

would simply have to say: “It is dif ferent, because Dr. Torrey was unique.” For a long time to come it will be cher ished by many as a daily help in the quiet hour. Published by Fleming H. Revell Company. Price $1.50. Eight Bandits Less A CHRISTIAN missionary was working ^ ^ in one of the villages of Russia, and on a recent occasion received some members into the church on profession of faith. Shortly afterwards the sheriff of the vil lage asked the missionary how many he had received into the church on that occasion, and was told that eight had been received. The sheriff replied: “Thank God, now we have eight bandits less in our village.” He recognized the power of the Gospel in the lives of those who accept it .—The Presbyterian of the South.
