'y'HERE is a phrase used several times in the Old Testament, in reference to Palestine, which is, perhaps, not sufficient ly attended to : “in the midst of the earth" (Exod. 8:22; Psa. 74:12; Ezek. 5:5; Mi- cah 5:7, 8). Its importance lies in the fact that it would seem to describe the geographical position of the Holy Land in the Old World. In Bible times, of course, neither Australasia nor America was known, and these lands do not come into the immediate foreground of the prophetic picture, though, of course, not altogether outside the scope of God’s pur poses for the earth. Disregarding these, then, and looking only to the countries of the Old World, a study of the map shows that Palestine is approximately (some would say exactly) in the center, and equally accessible from all parts of Europe, Africa, and Asia. This central position of Palestine is ac centuated by the various railway systems of the largest land surface of the globe (Europe-Africa-Asia). These necessar ily converge on Palestine, and, we are persuaded, make reasonably possible—in a way which would not have been ap parent a century ago—the forecast of millennial times, when all nations shall bring presents to God because of His temple at Jerusalem (Psa. 68:29). Periodical pilgrimages to Jerusalem— where, in the millennial temple, tribute will be paid by all nations to Jehovah as ‘‘the Lord of all the earth” —will be quite feasible over the above-mentioned rail way systems, apart altogether from the use of aircraft, which may be regarded as doubtful. Those who would be intel ligent concerning this view of the matter will be well advised to take note of .all railway developments bearing thereon. The Trans-Siberian Railway is a fact, and the Cape-to-Cairo Railway on the way to becoming so. In Palestine itself, a regular daily train service is now maintained between Jeru salem, Jaffa, Gaza, and Egypt, and the journey can be accomplished in fifteen hours. Branch lines connect with Damas cus, Trans-Jordania, and Syria. The Turkish Government, by the way, has recently purchased, for 117,000,000, the Anatolian Railway, popularly known as the Bagdad Railway, running from Haidar-Pasha, opposite Constantinople, to Adana, in Asia Minor.— Christian Herald and Signs of Our Times.
