Backpacking With the Kids (Again!) WHY I LOVE FAMILY HIKES

T here are few things in this world that I enjoy more than a backpacking trip with my two kids in tow. If you’ve been reading this newsletter from the beginning, you’ve probably already noticed this — I write about our little voyages pretty often. But that’s just because each and every one is exciting and important to me, a new chance to spend some quality time with my kids while breathing in that crisp, clear air you can only find hours away from any town. Being outside is a massive part of my life, and one I’m grateful to be able to share with the next generation. Luckily, my kids love trudging along hiking trails almost as much as their old man. Well, usually. They’re not always thrilled to face the gauntlet of a summit hike, but they often glide over steep, uneven, rocky terrain like it’s nothing. I’m always proud when we finally get to our goal destination, set up our tents, and get a chance to relax. It’s an incredible feeling to be a part of that kind of accomplishment with your kids. For me, the best part of being out in the wild is how slowly the day goes by. Nobody is making demands of you, and there aren’t a million electronic devices for the kids to obsess over, so we really get a chance to touch base in a more meaningful way than in our usual day-to-day interactions. We may do some hiking and fishing every once in a while, but mostly it’s just sitting around, enjoying one another’s company.

my daughter had her YMCA Adventure Guides graduation, a big ceremony for intrepid kids of all ages, which was really cool.

Then, the next weekend all of us were off to the breathtaking Thousand Island Lake, deep in the Ansel Adams wilderness. It was among our more difficult excursions, but that just made getting to the destination all the sweeter. With a place like Thousand Island, a glassy lake dotted with dozens of rocky little islands, it sometimes feels like you need to earn that beauty by getting out there. The last spot we went was Santa Barbara, where we took one of our usual routes, which was perhaps less unique but no less remarkable. I know I’m lucky to have kids who will do these kinds of things with me. It’s really heartening to have your kids actually interested in not only hanging out with you, but in sharing in one of your greatest passions. From the summit of a mountain, overlooking a landscape strewn with otherworldly hills and verdant greenery together with my family, I never take that for granted.

As crazy as it may sound, the kids were out camping four full weekends in a row last June. First, my son and I went out to camp near Malibu for a couple of days, where we surfed and hung out on the beach. Then,

Benefits of Intermittent Fasting

Why Celebs and CEOs Swear by It

Mental Acuity Fasting has become popular among the Silicon Valley crowd in recent years due to the endorphin rush and mental acuity associated with IF. When food is scarce and you haven’t eaten, your brain sends endorphins into your bloodstream to make you more alert. Your brain then digests information more efficiently. This is thought to be a holdover from our hunter-gatherer days, when we had to be alert enough to find food or we’d starve to death. CEOs in the nation’s tech capital have begun using this strategy in recent years to increase their productivity. Boosted Immune System According to researchers at the University of Southern California, fasting essentially flips a regenerative switch in the body. “It gives the ‘okay’ for stem cells to go ahead and begin proliferating and rebuild the entire system,” says Valter Longo, Ph.D., director of the USC Longevity Institute. “Fasting cycles can generate, literally, a new immune system.”

Tom Hardy, Christian Bale, Chris Hemsworth, Liv Tyler, and Beyonce — all of these celebrities have used intermittent fasting (IF) to meet their fitness goals. Fasting dates back thousands of years — in fact, one of the most popular fasts is called the “Daniel Fast” because it mirrors Daniel’s abstinence from food as portrayed in the Old Testament. This ancient trend is gaining popularity in the nutrition community. Here are three ways IF might benefit you. Weight Loss One of the most common misconceptions about fasting is that you can’t eat any food. The truth is that we all fast for a period of time each day while we’re asleep; intermittent fasting simply extends that fasting period. After eating, your body transitions to a fed state where your food is used for fuel. However, after 8–10 hours without food, your body enters a fasted state in which your body burns stored fat for energy, which leads to weight loss and more muscle definition. With intermittent fasting, you fast for a specified period — typically 16 hours — and eat all of your meals within an 8-hour period.

ATTENTION BACK PAIN AND SCIATICA SUFFERERS!

OUR LOWER BACK PAIN AND SCIATICA WORKSHOP REVEALS HOW TO NATURALLY HEAL BACK PAIN AND SCIATICA FOR GOOD.

“When I came in, I could not walk. The pain on my right side and down my right leg was terrible. I could not sit, stand, or lie down without pain. After the care I received here, my pain is gone … Now I feel like I can live again …” –Eileen C.

• Do you suffer with back pain or leg pain when you stand or walk? • Do you have pain when you sit for long periods or drive? • Do you experience pain, numbness, or tingling in your butt, groin, or down your leg? • Does your back ever “go out” if you move the wrong way? • Are you afraid your pain will get worse if you don’t do anything about it? If you have answered YES to any of the above questions (or have a stubborn spouse who is in denial), the Lower Back Pain and Sciatica Workshop may be a life-changing event for you.

BACK PAIN AND SCIATICA CAN COMPLETELY RUIN YOUR LIFE. I’VE SEEN IT MANY TIMES. • It can make you lean on the shopping cart when walking through the grocery store. (How embarrassing!) • It can take your focus away from enjoying your life, like spending time with your children or grandchildren. • It can mess up your work or force you to do a job you don’t want to do. • It can ruin your travel plans. • It can take away your ability to live life, leaving you to rely on others, as well as make them wait for you to sit down for a minute.

Less movement and enjoyment in life can lead to depression, increased stress, and a sedentary lifestyle (mostly sitting; not moving much) — all of which lead to bigger health problems.

Make Back Pain a

the main causes of back pain in the world.

The human spine is an incredibly complex and powerful — yet delicate — structure. In addition to allowing us to stand upright, our interlocking vertebrae house the spinal cord, the main highway for the frenzy of neurological messages coursing through our bodies every single second of the day. But, as with any part of our body serving such a complicated function, the spine is also quite vulnerable to injury. Trauma, overuse, anatomical misalignment, and just plain bad luck can result in persistent, nagging pain, discomfort, and dysfunction. Back pain is startlingly common in America, especially among the elderly. And as millions of back pain sufferers know, when your spine and the surrounding muscles are constantly crying out in pain, it can be difficult to think about anything else. Often, dysfunction is simply the result of embalances within your body, inflexibility, or limitations in your range of motion. These problems can rear their ugly heads even if — especially if — you’re not particularly active. Sitting at a desk all day every day is one of

Luckily, most forms of back pain are treatable without the use of surgery or serious medications.
