THE KING’S BUSINESS

all things and desperately, wicked; who can know it?”—Jer. 17 :9. In connection with my church, I have been conducting a month’s series o f evan gelistic meetings, and have been rejoiced at results in lives; this has put me under considerable pressure, but there are two things that have not been interrupted by it : the Marathon club o f which I have been teacher since Its organization, and the class in San Quentin. Occasionally I have taken a special singer with me, and the men have enjoyed those treats indeed.- W e have just finished the first three chapters o f Ephe- siah's. Under the title, “ The Prisoner,” V. J. Steffan, a member o f the prisoners’ Bible class, has written an article for T he K ing ’ s B usiness , from which the follow ing excerpts are made: “ The men o f San Quentin, especially those who are interested in and believe the teachings o f our Lord Jesus Christ, lift up their hearts in praise and thanksgiving, because o f the enthusiasm and deep inter est Christian folk in the outside world have in our spiritual and material welfare. “Among other religious organizations we have a Bible class, now conducted by L. S. Hanna o f San Anselmo, but formerly by Geo. W . Hunter, who was most faithful in conducting these services, for a period o f more than three years. W e praise God for men who, not caring for prison bars,

apply the teachings o f Jesus Christ in whole-hearted, earnest endeavor, in our behalf. Before leaving for the north,, Mr. Hunter interested an able, efficient and Godly man in our welfare. The services which were so interesting and spiritual under Mr. Hunter have so increased dur ing the last month, that the actual attend ance has doubled. Mr. Hanna has a con vincing personality, and his messages come from the very throne o f God. “ Oh, that it were possible for me to give you a true idea o f the prisoner man. Because he has come in conflict with the laws o f society does not necessarily prove him to be' a criminal at heart. Repeatedly in our meetings men bravely and openly stand up for Jesus.. In spite o f the sur-, roundings and ■ environment, men are being constantly won for the great family of God. T o these meetings we look forward with deep interest and earnest prayers. It is exceedingly encouraging to know that God knows his children and will answer their call. “ Our lessons are from Paul’s letter to the Ephesians. Their deep spiritual truths are made so plain and so personal that those affiliated with the class (eighty-two at present) are perfecting their loyalty to the service o f the Master. W e are glad to report that through our Bible class and similar influences, the Lord’s work is rapidly gaining ground.”
