EXPOSIT ION AND PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS

vs. 1, 2. "The Revelation of Jesus Christ,” which God gave unto (omit, unto) him, to show unto his servants things, (even the things) which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and sig nified it by his angel unto his servant John: who bare record (witness) o f the Word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, arid (even) o f all things which he saw.” The book from which our lesson is taken is incorrectly called in our Authorized Version “ The Revelation o f St. John the Divine,” for we are told here in this open ing verse that it is not “ The Revelation o f St. John the Divine,” but “The Revelation o f Jesus Christ.” The meaning o f these words, “ The Revelation o f Jesus Christ” is that this is a revelation which God gave to him and which He gives to us by- the pen o f John. It is a revelation o f Jesus Christ because he, gives it to us and fur thermore because he Himself is the cen tral theme o f the whole revelation that is

given. John, the beloved disciple, who wrote the gospel and the three epistles of John, was the same John who was given to see the visions here recorded and to write them down. Many' o f the things which are set forth prophetically in this book have not yet occurred historically, but on God’s scale o f time, where a thou sand years are as but a day on our scale o f time (2 Peter 3:8 ), these things which after eighteen hundred years have not yet been fulfilled “must shortly come to pass.” The things o f which John here hears wit ness are the things which God Himself said, and which therefore are called the “Word o f God,” and “the testimony of Jesus Christ” and the things which he him self saw. He gives, us no speculations o f his own, but only things that are absolutely sure, because either God said them, or Jesus testified to them, or John himself actually saw them. v. 3. “Blessed is he that readeth, and
