them with the sword of my mouth. He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto (to) the churches; (.) To him that overcometh (add , to him) will I give to eat ( omit, to eat) of the hidden manna, and (add , I) will give him a white stone, and in (upon) the stone a new name written which no man ( one) knoweth saving (but) he that receiveth it." While the church in Pergamum had proved faithful, it had not been faultless: there had been compromise with the world and with false cults. There had been what we would call to-day, “breadth o f view” in regard to worldly indulgences, and “liber­ ality” in doctrine. The Lord sternly calls them to immediate repentance, and so He does to-day the churches that are guilty o f like folly and sin. Unless they imme­ diately repented, the Lord Himself would “make war against” them. Let churches to-day that are growing “broad” in doc­ trine and practice take warning. What had these believers borne? Heb. 13:13. For what had they had patience? 2 f Thess. 3 :5. How had they labored? 2 Cor. 6:5. ■ Is tribulation a heritage o f the saints? John 16:33. In this try­ ing position they were in peculiar need o f a defender: so the Lord in this connection is represented as “He that hath the sharp two-edged s w o r d t h e Lord always appears as what we need. “ The sharp two-edged sword” is “the word o f God,” but that word especially as pronouncing judgment (vs. 12-16 cf. Heb. 4:12, 13; John 5 :22). vs. 14-17. “But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them (some) that hold the doctrine (teaching) o f Balaam, who taught Balac (Balak) to cast a stumblingblock before the children o f Israel, to eat things sacrificed (to) idols, and to commit fornication.
