USA WOMEN’S AMERICUP TEAM 1989 RESULTS
SAO PAULO, BRAZIL • AUGUST 6-13, 1989
The United States sent a talented squad to the 1989 World Qualifying Tournament. However, the University of Iowa’s C. Vivian Stringer and her team suffered some close setbacks and finished fourth with a 3-4 slate. Despite not medaling, the American women did achieve the most important goal, qualifying for the 1990 FIBA World Championship where the USA eventually went undefeated to win the gold. The U.S. opened competition with a strong 101-68 showing against Argentina and followed that with a 99-58 victory over the Dominican Republic. The USA dropped a one-point decision to Cuba, 78-77, to close out preliminary round play.
Opening second round action facing Cuba, the U.S. fell to the islanders in back-to-back nights with another close match, 71-67.
Rebounding for a 93-70 victory over Canada, the United States advanced to the semifinals. Facing Brazil for the right to play in the gold medal game, the United States was stopped short by the hosts, 95-90. Hoping to return with at least the bronze and facing a Canadian squad it had downed by 17 points just two days earlier, the USA’s hopes were dashed as Canada exacted a 71-63 victory. Venus Lacey paced all U.S. scorers with 92 points, Medina Dixon scored 78, Andrea Stinson netted 67, Pauline Jordan had 54 and Franthea Price rounded out the USA’s top scorers with 53 points.
