USA WOMEN’S PAN AMERICAN GAMES TEAM 2015 RESULTS

TORONTO, CANADA • JULY 16-20, 2015

After falling to host Canada in the gold medal game, the 2015 USA Pan American Women’s Basketball Team returned home from Toronto with silver. The USA opened play on July 16 with a 75-69 comeback win over Brazil. After Brazil used a 14-0 run to take the lead in the third quarter, the USA responded with an 11-2 spurt and closed strong. Breanna Stewart paced the Americans with 26 points and 12 rebounds, while Moriah Jefferson added 21 points. The following day, the USA rolled to a 94-55 win over Dominican Republic as 10 players scored, including five in double figures. Stewart led with 16 points, and Alaina Coates was a perfect 6-of-6 from the field. Without guard Tiffany Mitchell, who injured her ankle in a pre-tournament scrimmage, the USA went on to secure the No. 1 seed after de- feating Puerto Rico 93-77 on July 18. Stewart again starred with 24 points and 12 rebounds, while Coates added 23 points and 13 rebounds. In the semifinals, the Americans survived a late scare from Cuba to advance, 65-64. Trailing by 14 in the third quarter, the USA’s pressure de- fense forced turnovers and sparked a rally. Linnae Harper hit two clutch free throws with 7.7 seconds left and then sealed the win with a steal at the buzzer. Harper finished with 16 points, while Coates tallied 10 points and 15 rebounds. The gold medal game against Canada saw the USA build an early double-digit lead before the hosts stormed back. Canada outscored the Americans 26-15 in the third quarter and held on for an 81-73 victory behind 33 points from Kia Nurse. Stewart finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds, Harper was perfect from the free throw line (10-10) on her way to 16 points, and Jefferson added 14. Stewart, who also played in the 2011 Pan American Games, became the first U.S. woman to compete twice in the event. The silver marked another podium finish for the Americans, while Canada celebrated its first-ever women’s basketball gold medal at the Pan American Games. Cuba claimed the bronze with a 66-62 win over Brazil.

USA WOMEN’S PAN AMERICAN GAMES TEAM 2011 RESULTS

GUADALAJARA, MEXICO • OCTOBER 21-25, 2011

The 2011 USA Pan American Women’s Basketball Team, led by head coach Ceal Barry, finished seventh in Guadalajara, Mexico, with a 2-2 record. Featuring 11 collegians and one high school player, the Americans dropped two close games before closing with back-to-back wins. In the Oct. 21 opener, the USA fell 58-55 to Argentina despite 18 points, four blocks and a U.S. Pan Am record 21 rebounds from Breanna Stewart, who became just the second U.S. high schooler to compete in the event. Katelan Redmon added 16 points and eight rebounds, and Valencia McFarland tallied a U.S. single-game record seven steals. The next night, Puerto Rico edged the Americans 75-70 after outscoring the USA 14-9 in the final minutes. Stewart had 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Tavelyn James scored 12. Despite a 44-28 rebounding advantage, the USA committed 19 turnovers. Bouncing back, the USA defeated Mexico 87-58 on Oct. 23 behind a 35-15 third-quarter run. Stewart led with 17 points, and Christine Flores and April Sykes added 12 apiece. Redmon grabbed 10 rebounds as the Americans earned the No. 4 seed in their group. Closing the tournament, the USA routed Jamaica 87-41. James hit 5-of-6 from 3-point range and finished with 19 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Stewart added 12 points, while Shante Evans posted a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double. The Americans’ 62 rebounds against Jamaica, including 10 from Avery Warley, set a Pan American Games record, and their 49.5 rebounds per game established a new U.S. tournament mark.

Though the Americans placed seventh, Stewart’s standout play and the team’s record-setting rebounding highlighted the performance.

USA WOMEN’S PAN AMERICAN GAMES TEAM 2007 RESULTS

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL • JULY 20-24, 2007

Youth proved a fine substitute for experience at the 2007 Pan American Games, as the youngest team in the field became the first U.S. wom- en’s squad to win gold since 1987. Playing in Rio de Janeiro, the USA capped its run with a 79-66 victory over host Brazil on July 24, outscoring the hosts 30-13 in the fourth quarter. Led by head coach Dawn Staley in her first USA assignment as a head coach, the team featured college players facing seasoned pros. Staley, a five-time gold medalist and three-time Olympian, improved her USA Basketball coaching record to 17-2. The Americans opened with a 95-41 rout of Colombia behind 15 points from Matee Ajavon. Nine players scored at least five points as the USA built a 32-14 first-quarter lead and cruised to its largest margin of victory, 55 points. Emily Fox came off the bench to score 18 points in an 85-54 win over Argentina. The USA led 45-15 at halftime, shot 49% from the field and doubled Argentina’s rebounding total. Marissa Coleman and Nicky Anosike each pulled down eight boards. Coleman tallied 19 points as the USA defeated two-time defending champion Panama 78-63 to move to 3-0. Tasha Humphrey added nine points in the third quarter, while a 10-4 fourth-quarter run sealed the win. In the semifinals, Angel McCoughtry’s spark helped the USA erase an early nine-point deficit and take down Canada 75-59. The Americans never trailed after McCoughtry’s go-ahead basket in the second quarter. The gold medal game saw Brazil lead 53-49 after three quarters, but the USA surged ahead with a 12-1 run to open the fourth. Ajavon scored 27 points, including 11-of-18 shooting, tying the U.S. record for most made field goals in a Pan Am Games contest. Humphrey added a key 3-pointer late, and McCoughtry’s defensive energy helped the USA secure the title. Ajavon’s 27 points ranked tied for fifth in U.S. single-game Pan Am scoring history, sealing her place in the tournament’s record book as the USA celebrated its long-awaited return to the top of the podium.
