USA WOMEN’S PAN AMERICAN GAMES TEAM 2015 RESULTS

TORONTO, CANADA • JULY 16-20, 2015

After falling to host Canada in the gold medal game, the 2015 U.S. Pan American Women’s Basketball Team returned home from Toronto, Canada, with a silver medal. In its opening game on July 16, the USA rallied to secure a 75-69 win over Brazil. Brazil had a two-point lead (48-46) after a 14-0 run in the third period, but two made free throws by Moriah Jefferson and a three-point play from Breanna Stewart helped the USA to close the quarter by outscoring Brazil 11-2 to regain control of the game. Stewart led the USA with 26 points, 12 rebounds, and she shot 6-of-7 from the free throw line. Jefferson finished with 21 points and three assists, and she was 4-of-4 from the line. Shatori Walker-Kimbrough rounded out the USA’s double-digit scorers with 10 points on 2-of-3 shooting from 3-point. The USA’s depth was on full display during its lopsided 94-55 win over Dominican Republic on July 17. Ten of the USA’s 11 available players recorded at least 12 minutes and scored in the game, five scored in double digits and the USA had 27 assists on 37 made field goals. Stewart led the USA with 16 points; Alaina Coates was a perfect 6-of-6 from the field on her way to 14 points; Stephanie Mavunga contributed 13 points; and Caroline Coyer and Walker-Kimbrough added 11 points apiece. Additionally, Taya Reimer and Sophie Brunner each grabbed six rebounds, while Kelsey Plum dished out a game-high five assists. Playing at Ryerson Athletic Center, the USA was without guard Tiffany Mitchell for the duration of the tournament after Mitchell sprained her left ankle during a scrimmage against Canada on July 14. Its final preliminary round game on July 18, the USA outscored Puerto Rico 26-13 over the last 10 minutes to earn a 93-77 victory and secure a No. 1 seed heading into the medal semifinals. The USA was paced by Stewart, who was 4-of-5 from 3-point on her way to 24 points and 12 rebounds, and Coates, who had a double-double by halftime and finished with 23 points and 13 rebounds. Jefferson rounded out the USA’s double-digit scorers with 14 points and a game-high six assists. Two made free throws and a last-second steal from Linnae Harper helped the USA survive its semifinal game against Cuba with a 65-64 win that advanced the USA into the gold medal game. The USA trailed by as many as 14 points in the third quarter, but battled back, thanks

USA WOMEN’S PAN AMERICAN GAMES TEAM 2011 RESULTS

GUADALAJARA, MEXICO • OCTOBER 21-25, 2011

Facing off against senior national teams from the FIBA Americas zone, USA head coach Ceal Barry and her squad of 11 collegians and one high school player finished the 2011 Pan American Games in seventh place with a 2-2 record. Playing at the CODE Dome in Guadalajara, Mexico, the USA lost two close games by a combined eight points before rebounding with two wins. Since the tournament took place in October, the collegiate team members essentially were on loan from their respective college or universi- ty during their team’s preseason training and even a few days of practice. In a game that featured six lead changes in the fourth quarter alone, the USA fell to Argentina 58-55 in its opening contest on Oct. 21. De- spite 18 points, four blocked shots and a U.S. women’s Pan American Games record 21 rebounds from Breanna Stewart, who became just the second U.S. women’s high school basketball player to represent her country in the Pan American Games, the USA was unable to capitalize on its opportunities in the game’s final minute and fell short by just three points. Katelan Redmon added 16 points and eight rebounds, while Valencia McFarland, playing her 20th birthday, collected seven steals for another U.S. women’s Pan American Games single-game high. The next day, in a game that was decided in the final few minutes as well, the USA suffered a 75-70 setback against Puerto Rico. Tied at 61-61 midway through the fourth quarter, the USA was outscored 14-9 over the final five minutes as Puerto Rico sank its final six free throw attempts to seal the USA’s fate. Stewart finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds, Tavelyn James contributed 12 points, Marissa Kastanek added nine and Shante Evans collected 11 rebounds. Despite shooting 37.7 percent to Puerto Rico’s 36.8 percent from the field and winning the rebounding battle 44-28, the USA was plagued by 19 turnovers to Puerto Rico’s 11. The USA wrapped up pool play as Group A’s No. 4 seed on Oct. 23 as a 35-15 scoring advantage in the third quarter helped the USA pull away from previously unbeaten Mexico on its way to an 87-58 win. For a third straight game, the USA was led by Stewart, who finished with 17 points, seven rebounds and three assists while shooting 5-of-5 from the free throw line. Also tallying double-digit scoring were Christine Flores and April Sykes with 12 points apiece and Emilie Johnson with 10 points, five rebounds and three assists. Katelan Redmon collected 10 rebounds.

USA BASKETBALL HISTORY

USA WOMEN’S PAN AMERICAN GAMES TEAM 2007 RESULTS

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL • JULY 20-24, 2007

Youth was a fine substitute for experience at the 2007 Pan American Games. Comprised of college women who had the task of going against many foreign pros, the USA women, the youngest team in the field, became the first U.S. women’s basketball team to claim gold since 1987. The red, white and blue outscored host Brazil 30-13 in the fourth quarter of its July 24 championship tilt to capture a 79-66 win. Cuba finished third. In her first USA Basketball assignment as a head coach, Dawn Staley did what she always does - win. Staley, a five-time gold medal winner and three-time Olympian, improves her coaching record to 17-2 after spending 2006 as an assistant to the USA National Team. Matee Ajavon paced the U.S. in its opening 95-41 wallop of Colombia. Ajavon scored 15 points, and the red, white and blue sprung out to a 17-4 advantage five minutes into the contest, holding an 18-point lead, 32-14, after the first quarter. In charge 78-35 after three quarters, Team USA posted its largest advantage - 55 points - in the fourth quarter of the contest. Nine players scored at least five points. Emily Fox highlighted the red, white and blue scoring in game two, an 85-54 defeat of Argentina. Fox deposited 18 points off the bench. Team USA led 45-15 at the half after shooting 49 percent overall and 50 percent (8-of-16) from long range. Nicky Anosike and Marissa Cole- man had the most hauls off the glass with eight boards each, as the team doubled its opponents’ rebounding totals. Coleman tallied 19 points, as the USA took down two-time defending Pan Ams champ Panama 78-63 to improve to 3-0. Tasha Humphrey scored nine points in the third quarter, and the USA put the game out of reach with a 10-4 run to start the fourth quarter. Canada put pressure on the red, white and blue early in game four, mounting a nine-point lead early in the first period. That was the largest deficit the U.S. faced during the competition, but Angel McCoughtry took care of it, putting her team in front for good with five points near the seven-minute mark in the second quarter en route to a 75-59 semifinal victory. Playing in front of a host Brazilian crowd with the title on the line, the USA hopped on the Ajavon express and did whatever it could along
