USA WOMEN’S PAN AMERICAN GAMES TEAM 2015 RESULTS
TORONTO, CANADA • JULY 16-20, 2015
After falling to host Canada in the gold medal game, the 2015 USA Pan American Women’s Basketball Team returned home from Toronto with silver. The USA opened play on July 16 with a 75-69 comeback win over Brazil. After Brazil used a 14-0 run to take the lead in the third quarter, the USA responded with an 11-2 spurt and closed strong. Breanna Stewart paced the Americans with 26 points and 12 rebounds, while Moriah Jefferson added 21 points. The following day, the USA rolled to a 94-55 win over Dominican Republic as 10 players scored, including five in double figures. Stewart led with 16 points, and Alaina Coates was a perfect 6-of-6 from the field. Without guard Tiffany Mitchell, who injured her ankle in a pre-tournament scrimmage, the USA went on to secure the No. 1 seed after de- feating Puerto Rico 93-77 on July 18. Stewart again starred with 24 points and 12 rebounds, while Coates added 23 points and 13 rebounds. In the semifinals, the Americans survived a late scare from Cuba to advance, 65-64. Trailing by 14 in the third quarter, the USA’s pressure de- fense forced turnovers and sparked a rally. Linnae Harper hit two clutch free throws with 7.7 seconds left and then sealed the win with a steal at the buzzer. Harper finished with 16 points, while Coates tallied 10 points and 15 rebounds. The gold medal game against Canada saw the USA build an early double-digit lead before the hosts stormed back. Canada outscored the Americans 26-15 in the third quarter and held on for an 81-73 victory behind 33 points from Kia Nurse. Stewart finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds, Harper was perfect from the free throw line (10-10) on her way to 16 points, and Jefferson added 14. Stewart, who also played in the 2011 Pan American Games, became the first U.S. woman to compete twice in the event. The silver marked another podium finish for the Americans, while Canada celebrated its first-ever women’s basketball gold medal at the Pan American Games. Cuba claimed the bronze with a 66-62 win over Brazil.
