USA WOMEN’S PAN AMERICAN GAMES TEAM 2003 RESULTS

SANTO DOMINGO, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC • AUGUST 2-9, 2003

Capturing silver at the 2003 Pan American Games was a young USA team that had trained together for just two weeks before arriving in San- to Domingo, Dominican Republic. Comprised of college players, the Americans faced veteran squads from Cuba and Brazil, both featuring Olympians, and still finished with an impressive 5-2 record. Balanced scoring was the hallmark of the U.S. effort, with five different players leading the team in scoring across seven games. Rebekkah Brunson averaged 11.3 points and 5.6 rebounds, while Jamie Carey added 9.6 points per game and shot 46.4% from 3-point. Jenni Benning- field (9.1 ppg.), Laurie Koehn (8.9 ppg.) and Ann Strother (7.9 ppg.) also contributed consistently. The USA opened against defending champion Cuba on Aug. 2, holding a 46-32 halftime lead before falling 84-62. Strother and Koehn each scored 11 points. The setback was followed by five straight wins, beginning with a narrow 56-53 victory over Canada in which Brunson tallied a double-double and Loree Moore sealed the game with a steal in the final seconds. Carey’s record-setting 6-of-6 3-point shooting powered a 77-64 upset of Brazil, and the USA then rolled past Argentina 93-78 behind five double-digit scorers. Pool play closed with a 109-54 rout of host Dominican Republic, highlighted by Koehn’s six 3-pointers in the first half and a team-high 23 points. Benningfield added 21, while Strother and Iciss Tillis chipped in 12 apiece. In the semifinals, the Americans outlasted Brazil 75-69 in overtime, buoyed by Carey’s 18 points and seven assists and Powell’s perfect 18-of- 18 free throw shooting. Powell finished with 17 points, including seven in overtime. Facing Cuba again for gold, the USA never led but remained close before falling 75-64. Brunson led with 16 points, and Moore added 13 points, nine rebounds and three steals as the Americans secured silver.
