USA WOMEN’S PAN AMERICAN GAMES TEAM 1991 RESULTS
HAVANA, CUBA • AUGUST 3-11, 1991
Chasing a third straight Pan American Games title, the 1991 USA Women’s Basketball Team settled for bronze after two narrow defeats by a combined eight points in Havana, Cuba. The Americans opened with an 87-70 win over Canada behind 20 points from Bridgette Gordon. Against Brazil the following day, the USA raced to an early 26-8 lead, but foul trouble and poor shooting (39.7%) proved costly. Jennifer Azzi tied the game at 81-81 with 2:20 left, but Brazil closed strong for an 87-84 win. Teresa Edwards led the USA with 20 points, while Katrina McClain added 16. The United States rebounded with a 97-40 rout of Argentina, holding its opponent to just 10 second-half points. McClain posted 20 points and 10 rebounds, and Edwards scored 18. Already set to meet Cuba in the semifinals, the USA topped the hosts 91-71 in pool play behind a decisive 17-4 run to open the second half. Edwards reached 20 points for the third time in four games, while Gordon, Medina Dixon and Azzi also scored in double figures. In the semifinal rematch, however, Cuba controlled the tempo and edged the USA 86-81. Regla Hernandez scored 28 points, including six straight late in the game to seal the win. Edwards paced the Americans with 22. The bronze medal game against Canada was decided early as the USA sprinted to a 19-2 start en route to a 92-61 victory. Edwards once again led with 22 points, while McClain and Gordon contributed 16 apiece. Brazil went on to capture gold with a 97-76 win over Cuba, while the Americans claimed their seventh Pan Am medal but fell short of the “three-peat.”
