USA WOMEN’S PAN AMERICAN GAMES TEAM 1983 RESULTS

CARACAS, VENEZUELA • AUGUST 14-27, 1983

Seeking its first Pan American Games gold since 1975 after falling to Cuba in 1979, the 1983 USA Women’s Basketball Team returned to the top of the podium in Caracas, Venezuela. Featuring the same roster that had claimed silver at the World Championship just weeks earlier, the team was loaded with future Olympians, including Denise Curry, Anne Donovan, Janice Lawrence, Pam McGee, Cheryl Miller, Kim Mulkey, Cindy Noble and Lynette Woodard. Fran Garmon served as head coach, with Kay Yow as her assistant. The USA’s first two scheduled opponents, Peru and Colombia, withdrew, delaying the start of competition. When play began, the Americans opened with a 107-92 win over eventual bronze medalist Brazil, led by Miller’s 24 points, Lawrence’s 22 and Woodard’s 18. In its closest con- test, the USA edged Canada 87-79 as Woodard scored 22. The highly anticipated rematch with Cuba ended differently than 1979. Behind 18 first-half points from Miller, the Americans took a narrow halftime lead before breaking the game open with a 12-0 run en route to a 100-82 victory. Miller finished with 30 points, while Woodard added 19. From there, the USA dominated. Lisa Ingram poured in 23 points in a 113-33 rout of Venezuela, and seven players scored in double figures in a 112-65 win over Puerto Rico that secured the gold medal. Woodard paced the team with 20 points, followed by Miller (18), Lawrence (17) and Curry (16). Miller finished the tournament as the team’s leading scorer at 19.8 points per game, with Woodard adding 19.0 and Lawrence contributing 15.8 points and 5.0 rebounds. The USA proved dominant on both ends, averaging 103.8 points per game — the first U.S. women’s team to average over 100 — and winning its five games by an average of 33.6 points.
