USA MEN’S U19 WORLD CUP TEAM 2015 RESULTS

CRETE, GREECE • JUNE 27-JULY 5, 2015

Under the guidance of University of Arizona coach and former USA Basketball player Sean Miller, the Americans compiled a perfect 7-0 record and earned gold. The U.S. cruised through its three preliminary round games, winning by an average of 31.3 points a game. Opening against Iran, behind a 20-point and 10-rebound showing by Josh Jackson, the USA posted an 83-53 win. Facing Croatia the following day, the U.S. ran away with a decisive 103-81 win as Jayson Tatum poured in 22 points. Closing out preliminary round play versus Egypt, Harry Giles, Caleb Swanigan and Tatum each contributed 13 points as the Americans stormed to a 92-50 win. Advancing to the round of 16 and facing familiar foe Argentina, balanced scoring and a dominating defensive performance paved the way to a lopsided 93-45 USA victory. Giles’ double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds paced the USA, while also aiding the USA’s cause were Tatum with 14 points and Allonzo Trier with 13 points. Jalen Brunson made all three of his 3-point attempts and finished with 17 points, while Giles and Jackson contributed 14 points each, as the USA improved to 5-0 and advanced to the semifinals after topping Italy 86-65 in its quarterfinal match-up. Facing Greece in front of a sold-out home crowd, Brunson scored a game-high 30 points, and the USA made the big plays when needed as it advanced to the gold medal game after out-battling Greece 82-76. Brunson’s scoring outburst was the fourth-highest single-game scoring effort in USA men’s U19 history. Giles finished with his fourth-straight double-double, recording 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Terrance Ferguson and Tatum each added 11 points. Following 40 competitive minutes, which ended in a 67-67 tie, the USA rolled in the five minutes of overtime and outscored upset-mind- ed Croatia 12-4 to earn a hard-fought 79-71 win in the gold medal game. Brunson, who finished with a team-high seven assists while not committing a turnover, scored all 14 points of his U.S.-high in the second half and overtime. Giles contributed his fifth-consecutive dou- ble-double, finishing with 13 points and 16 rebounds, Tatum added 13 points and six rebounds and Jackson contributed 10 points and eight rebounds. Brunson, who averaged 14.0 points, 3.3 rebounds and team-highs of 5.6 assists and 2.1 steals, was named the MVP of the FIBA U19 World Championship. Giles, who averaged 14.0 points and 10.6 rebounds, was named to the all-tournament team.
