USA MEN’S U19 WORLD CUP TEAM 1991 RESULTS

EDMONTON, CANADA • JULY 18-24, 1991

From the start, the USA set its sight on one thing: reclaiming the title it lost to Yugoslavia in 1987. When it was all done, the Americans re- turned home with the gold. The USA’s symmetry was obvious from the start. Coached by Lon Kruger, the USA notched an opening blowout of Japan, 124-51, as all 12 U.S. players scored. Behind 25 points from Lance Miller and 22 more from Wesley Person, the Americans recorded a come-from-behind 86- 73 win over Nigeria, then, in overtime, overcame Spain, 106-101 as Bryan Caver paced the U.S. with 24 points. The U.S. again was tested and met the challenge, claiming a 69-62 victory over Argentina. The 4-0 Americans faced Canada next, and the U.S. team continued to gel as it captured a 97-72 victory. An expected tight battle with Brazil never materialized as the U.S., behind Caver’s 17 points, handed Brazil a 94-78 loss. Four years earlier, Yugoslavia beat the United States twice to win the 1987 title. The 1991 semifinals featured a rematch, with the winner advancing to the gold medal game. As it had done throughout the tourney, the United States relied on its balance to earn a hard-fought 76-74 win. Neither team could domi- nate in the first 20 minutes, and at halftime the game was an even affair, 34-34. The U.S. opened the second half by scoring 10 consecutive points, but then the Yugoslavs answered with eight points to keep the game tight. With the game deadlocked 72-72 and only 23 seconds to play, Antonio Lang sank two foul shots to give the U.S. a 74-72 advantage, then added two more free throws to push the U.S. lead to 76-72. Yugoslavia scored with six seconds remaining to make it 76-74, but the U.S. let time expire and claimed the win. Facing unbeaten Italy in the gold medal game, the Americans fell behind early and by halftime trailed 44-30. Things did not improve early in the second half and, in fact, with just 12 minutes to play the USA lagged behind 64-47. But the tide slowly turned, and Caver took charge. With the U.S. trailing 75-71, Caver drove to score with 2:26 remaining, and less than 30 seconds later, recovered a blocked shot and went coast-to-coast for a layup to even the score, 75-75. He sank two free throws with 37 seconds to go, but Italy sank a bucket to send the game to overtime. In overtime, the USA fell behind, only to be bailed out by Caver. Down 85-81, Caver hit a jumper with 1:07 to go, added a layup and foul shot with 33 seconds on the clock, then sank two free throws with four seconds left to seal the 90-85 victory. Caver finished with 19 points, 18 coming in the second half and overtime.
