USA MEN’S WORLD CUP TEAM 2023 RESULTS
MANILA, PHILIPPINES • AUGUST 25-SEPTEMBER 10, 2023
Playing in the first World Cup held in three countries (Philippines, Japan, Indonesia), the USA started strong but was ultimately denied a medal, finishing fourth after posting a 5-3 record. The U.S. played all of its games in Manila, Philippines. It was the first major international competition for the U.S. with Grant Hill as the national team’s managing director and Steve Kerr as head coach. Opening pool play against New Zealand, reigning 2023 NBA Rookie of the Year Paolo Banchero scored 13 of his 21 points in the third quarter as the U.S over- came a 10-point deficit to roll to a 99-72 victory. Kerr’s team improved to 2-0 as Austin Reaves led a strong showing by the bench, with 15 points, five rebounds and a team-high six assists in a 109-81 victory over Greece as the U.S. clinched a spot in the second round. Against Jordan to complete the first round of pool play, Anthony Edwards exploded for 18 of his 22 points in the first half and finished with eight rebounds and four assists in just under 19 minutes during a 110-62 victory. The U.S. won Group C at 3-0. In the first of two second round games of pool play, Edwards came alive in the second half, scoring all 17 of his points in an 85-73 triumph over Montenegro to improve to 4-0 and earn a spot in the quarterfinals. With an Olympic spot sewn up and quarterfinal seeding at stake, the U.S. was unable to overcome Lithuania making its first nine 3-point shots and fell 110-104. Edwards had another massive game, scoring 35 points, including 19 in the second half. Edwards equaled Carmelo Anthony (2006 vs. Italy) for the second-most points in U.S. World Cup history and came up just shy of Kevin Durant’s record of 38 set in 2010 against Lithuania. Mikal Bridges scored 14 of his 24 points in the first half as the U.S. bounced back in the quarterfinals with a 100-63 victory over Italy. The Americans hit 17 3-pointers, including six by Tyrese Haliburton (18 points) to raise their record to 5-1. Facing unbeaten Germany in the semifinals, the U.S. erased double-digit deficits in each half, including being down 12 in the fourth quarter, but lost 113-111. Edwards again led the U.S. with 23 points, while Reaves had 21. In a battle of North American neighbors for the bronze medal, Bridges hit an unbelievable 3-pointer to force overtime after intentionally missing a free throw, but Canada outscored the U.S. 16-7 in the extra period for a 127-118 win. The teams combined for the second-most points in World Cup history (251, Brazil vs. China, 1978). Edwards scored 24 points and grabbed five rebounds, while Reaves added 23 points and five rebounds. Edwards was named to the All-Star 5 after averaging 18.9 points and 4.6 rebounds.
