ALL-TIME USA MEN’S U18 AMERICAS TEAM 2016 RESULTS
VALDIVIA, CHILE • JULY 19-23, 2016
Led by University of Texas head coach Shaka Smart, the USA won by an average of 30.4 points and featured the tournament MVP in Markelle Fultz while capturing the USA’s eighth overall and fourth straight men’s U18 gold medal. The USA’s depth was on display in a 103-70 win over Puerto Rico. Five players reached double-digit scoring, and the USA recorded 25 assists and 44 fastbreak points while forcing Puerto Rico into 26 turnovers. Michael Porter Jr. finished with 20 points; Jarrett Allen had 18 points and eight rebounds; Mohamed Bamba and Fultz each contributed 14 points; and Matt Coleman III tallied 10 points. Finishing with 35 assists, the USA easily defeated the U.S. Virgin Islands 107-63. Porter had nine of his game-high 20 points and the U.S. forced 11 turnovers in the first 10 minutes. P.J. Washington scored 19 points; Fultz finished with 11 points and four assists; Allen collected 10 rebounds to go with seven points and four assists; and Trae Young dished out seven assists. The USA outscored Chile 20-10 in the fourth quarter to turn what had been a tightly contested game into a 70-50 win. In front of a packed house in support of the host nation, the USA held Chile to 26.2% from the field and just four fastbreak points. Fultz had 11 points, eight re- bounds, four assists and three blocks; Coleman added 10 points, six rebounds and six assists; and Bamba collected nine rebounds to go with his seven points. With seven 3-pointers in the third quarter, the USA blew past Brazil 88-48 and into the gold medal game. By halftime, Allen had scored all 14 of his points, Fultz had dished out seven assists and the USA had forced 19 turnovers. Porter led the USA with 17 points; Young added 11 points; and Fultz finished with 10 points, 11 assists and six steals. Additionally, James Banks tied the USA U18 men’s record for blocked shots with five blocks to go along with his nine rebounds. With only a two-point lead and 3:57 remaining in the gold medal game, the USA allowed Canada only one more basket while it rallied to 15 points to secure a 99-84 win and claim the gold medal. Fultz scored 23 points to go with five rebounds and five. Five U.S. players scored in double-digits overall, including P.J. Washington (19 points), Porter (15), Hamidou Diallo (14 points) and Allen (10).
