ALL-TIME USA MEN’S U18 AMERICAS TEAM 2006 RESULTS

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS • JUNE 28-JULY 2, 2006

Dominating opponents by an average of 29.7 points, the USA Men’s U18 National Team cruised to four straight victories, qualifying for the 2007 FIBA U19 World Championship and securing a gold medal at Bill Greehy Arena on the campus of St. Mary’s University. Assisted by Georgia Tech’s Paul Hewitt and DePaul’s Jerry Wainwright, Washington’s Lorenzo Romar led the USA to its fourth title in five U18 Championships (formerly known as the COBAPA Junior World Championship Qualifying Tournament). Jumping to an early lead that was never challenged, the USA first rolled over Uruguay in a 111-64 victory that was headed by 17 points from both Jerryd Bayless and Michael Beasley.

Behind 18 points on 9-of-11 shooting from Stanley Robinson, the Americans out slugged Brazil 90-66 to earn Pool A’s No. 1 seed.

Matched against Canada in the medal round semifinals, six U.S. players scored in double digits, and behind 16 points from Bayless, 13 from Kyle Singler, 12 from Taylor King and 11 points from Beasley, Nolan Smith and DaJuan Summers, the USA earned a 92-66 victory. In the final game, fueled by a 24-point, 10-rebound effort from Spencer Hawes, the USA erased a two-point first quarter deficit to easily cap- ture gold with a 104-82 victory over Argentina. The USA dominated the tournament’s team statistics, ranking No.1 in 13 of the 19 categories, including scoring offense (99.2 ppg), scoring defense (69.5 ppg), assists (20.5 apg) and steals (12 spg).
