ALL-TIME USA MEN’S U17 WORLD CUP TEAM 2016 RESULTS
ZARAGOZA, SPAIN • JUNE 23-JULY 3, 2016
Led by Don Showalter for the fourth time in as many U17 World Cups, the USA swept its competition by an average of 44.6 points a game and dominated the glass by a +24.6 margin. Further, the USA trailed for fewer than 12 of the 280 minutes played over its seven-game run. As it had in the previous three editions of the event, the USA produced the tournament MVP. Collin Sexton, a last-minute invite to training camp, came off the bench to average a team-leading 17.0 points, while dishing out a team-best 4.2 assists. Joining Sexton on the All-Star Five was USA teammate Wendell Carter Jr. Led by 15 points by Kevin Knox II, the U.S. had seven athletes score in double digits en route to a 119-45 victory over Taiwan. Sexton powered the USA with 20 points in its closest win of the tournament, an 18-point 84-66 defeat of Turkey. Closing preliminary play, the Americans dispatched Egypt 104-57 as seven U.S. players scored in double digits, led by 19 from Markus Howard. Meeting South American rival Argentina in the round of 16, the USA wasted no time running out to an early lead and an eventual 109-56 win. Carte’Are Gordon and Sexton tied for team-high scoring honors with 14 points apiece. Trailing for the first time in the tournament, 13-7 at 4:15 in the first period of its quarterfinals game against South Korea, the USA went up 14-13 30 seconds later. From there, led by 24 points from Sexton, the Americans raced to a record-setting 133-81 victory to advance to the semifinals. The 133 points was the most the U.S. men had scored in U17 play (previous was 132). After a close first half, which saw the U.S. hold a 47-37 lead at the break, a 16-2 third quarter run separated the USA from Lithuania in a 98-70 semifinal victory as Howard led the team with 15 points. For a finals rematch against a confident Turkish squad, the U.S. spotted Turkey an 8-2 lead to start the game. From there, however, the Amer- icans turned on the ignition, went on a 19-0 scoring spree and continued to dominate for a 96-56 golden victory behind 17 points from Trent. The win was the largest margin of victory in a men’s U17 title game.
