ALL-TIME USA MEN’S U17 WORLD CUP TEAM 2014 RESULTS

DUBAI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES • AUGUST 8-16, 2014

As two-time defending FIBA U17 gold medalists, the 2014 USA U17 squad shook off the pressure of keeping its winning streak alive and came away with a perfect 7-0 record and the gold medal. Led by coach Don Showalter, who upped his overall U17 record to 23-0, the U.S. was paced by eventual MVP Malik Newman’s 14.9 points and 3.0 assists a game. Joining Newman on the five-member all-tournament team was Diamond Stone, who added 13.4 points and a team-best 9.7 rebounds per game. The USA, which had a well-rounded scoring effort that saw five players average in double-digits, never trailed in its first five games and lagged behind for just 8:19 in its final two contests. Paced by Stone’s 22 points and 10 boards, the U.S. earned an 83-73 opening victory over a strong Greek squad. Two days later, the USA ran away with a 99-56 win over Angola as all 12 athletes scored, led by 14 points from Harry Giles. Closing preliminary play, the USA earned a 124-64 victory over Philippines, paced by 16 points apiece from Josh Jackson and Newman. Behind Jayson Tatum’s 19 points, the U.S. jumped out 22-0 and dispatched Japan 122-38 in its round of 16 game. The Americans downed China 113-71 in the quarterfinals behind 21 points and 10 rebounds from Henry Ellenson. After holding onto a narrow 39-36 edge at halftime, the U.S. broke away from previously unbeaten Serbia to take an 89-68 semifinal win behind a team-high 15 points from Newman. Advancing to the finals against an Australian squad that came back from a 22-point deficit to earn an 80-74 overtime win over Spain the semi- finals, the red, white and blue held off Australia 99-92. The USA fell behind by 10 points early, but slowly chipped away at Australia’s lead and went up for good, 28-27, to close out the first quarter. However, each time the USA tried to pull away, Australia, which hit 11 3s, battled back. When the USA held its final double-digit lead of the game, 92-82, Australia began launching 3s, three of which hit their mark and with 30.1 seconds left the edge was down to 96-91. However, the Americans would not let the Aussies any closer and held on for the victory.
