USA U16 MEN’S AMERICAS TEAM 2023 RESULTS

MERIDA, MEXICO • JUNE 5-11, 2023

Since the inception of the FIBA Men’s U16 Americas Championship in 2009, the USA has captured every gold medal. The 2023 edition of the competition was no different as the U.S. defeated Canada 118-36 in the Final for their eighth-straight gold medal at Poliforum Zamná. The USA captured gold through their defense. By forcing 12 first-quarter turnovers, which resulted in a 27-2 run, the USA comfortably led, 71-23, at half over Canada. The Canadians were held to four points in the third quarter while the USA put 27 on the board. The U.S. hit the century mark on their first possession of the fourth quarter (100-27). The U.S. faced little adversity at the competition with the closest final score being a 35-point difference. The Americans scored over the century mark five times, including the 118-36 decision over Canada for the gold. The USA defeated Puerto Rico, Argentina and Mexico to claim the top spot in Group A to begin the tournament. The U.S. only trailed for 24 seconds, a single possession, over those three games. The American bench outscored their Group A foes 142-56. In the quarterfinals against Uruguay, the USA scored 41 fast break points to a 123-45 victory. The Americans had a team-record 31 steals in the game. The semifinals saw the USA defeat Puerto Rico for the second time, 122-63. The starting lineup accounted for 81 points. Cameron Boozer was honored as the MVP of the competition. Additionally, he was included on the All-Star Five with teammate Darryn Peterson. Cameron Boozer averaged 16.8 points and 9.8 rebounds over six games. Carrying an unblemished 6-0 record at the event this week, the Americans improved their all-time record to 43-0. The USA qualified for the 2024 FIBA Men’s U17 World Cup in Turkey with a guaranteed top four finish at the competition.

USA U16 MEN’S AMERICAS TEAM 2021 RESULTS

XALAPA, MEXICO • AUG. 23-29, 2021

The USA’s path to a seventh consecutive FIBA Americas U16 Championship gold medal wasn’t all smooth sailing, and in the end the Americans overcame Argentina (5-1) 90-75 in Xalapa, Mexico, to finish 6-0 and again claim gold. On a night when the USA struggled with its shooting and just putting points on the board in the first half, it dominated the game’s final 12:22 and outscored Argentina 43-28 to take the victory. Robert Dillingham, who finished with 31 points to set the USA single-game U16 scoring record, and averaged 15.7 points and a team-high 6.2 assists a game for the tournament, was named MVP. Joining Dillingham on the All-Tournament Team was Ronald Holland who finished with 21 points and 12 rebounds in the gold medal game, and averaged team-highs of 19.0 points and 10.2 rebounds a game in the USA’s six victories. With the win, the USA extended its undefeated record in U16 play to 37-0, while taking its seventh straight gold medal. Entering the gold medal game averaging 122.2 points a game, the USA couldn’t buy a hoop in the first quarter and found itself trailing 20-11 after the first 10 minutes. The U.S. posted more points in the fourth quarter than they had in the first two periods, and outscored Argentina 31-25 to take home the gold with the 90-75 win. Having made just 4-of-24 3-pointers entering the final period, the USA finally found its shooting eye and connected on 7-of-13 3s. The tightest game of the tournament was the semifinal matchup with Canada. A final score decided by 18-points, the USA prevailed 99-81. Prior to the contest with the Canadians, the U.S. scored in triple figures in four straight games. Starting with Puerto Rico (118-67), the USA offense excelled over the Dominican Republic (133-74), Chile (138-59) and Mexico (123-53).

BELEM, BRAZIL • JUNE 3-9, 2019

In his first U16 head coaching position, Mike Jones where Don Showalter left off by keeping USA’s golden streak alive. Jones’s squad finished the tournament leading the field in nearly every major statistical category as the U.S. outscored its competition by a 38.2 points a game. Fighting back from an early 17-point deficit, the USA went for an 83-57 victory over Argentina. Jabari Smith Jr. led the Americans with 22 points and nine rebounds. Amari Bailey finished with 22 points and Jalen Duren tallied 18 points and 17 rebounds to help the USA to a 104-52 win over Mexico. In capping preliminary play with a 122-71 victory over Dominican Republic, the squad set three USA U16 single-game records. Max Christie scored 24 points on a USA record 8-of-10 made 3-pointers; Richard Isaacs Jr. dished out a U.S. U16 single-game record 11 assists to go with 13 points and seven rebounds; and as a team, the USA shot 56.4% (22-39 3FG) from 3-point to smash the previous USA U16 record of 47.6% (10-21 3FG). Advancing to the quarterfinals, the USA had no trouble bypassing Puerto Rico 102-51. Smith’s 15 points led five U.S. players in double-digits. The USA propelled itself into a sixth-straight U16 gold medal game with a 90-58 semifinal victory over Argentina. Smith shot 5-of-8 from the field and 7-of-8 from the line to finish with a team-high 18 points. Chris Livingston, who was perfect on his eight free throw attempts to tie a USA U16 single-game record for free throw percentage and free throws made, notched a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Behind a balanced scoring effort that saw six USA players reach double digits, the USA upped its record to 6-0 and earned a sixth-straight FIBA Americas U16 gold medal after topping Canada 94-71. USA U16 MEN’S AMERICAS TEAM 2017 RESULTS

FORMOSA, ARGENTINA • JUNE 14-18, 2017

Headed up by Don Showalter, the USA won its fifth-straight U16 gold. The USA’s 112.6 points per game was led by eventual tournament MVP Vern Carey Jr.’s 14.0 points. The U.S. featured five athletes with double-digit scoring averages and three more who had at least 9.0 a game. Opening with a 110-69 victory over Puerto Rico, Carey led the team with team highs of 17 points and nine rebounds as all 12 athletes scored. A 94-45 victory over Dominican Republic secured the USA’s berth into the 2018 FIBA U17 World Cup and a spot in the semifinals. The Amer- icans led from wire-to-wire and were led by 15 points and 10 rebounds from James Wiseman as six USA team members scored in double digits. Nine U.S. athletes scored in double figures, led by Zion Harmon’s 17 and five assists, as the USA put on a clinic against Mexico for a 127-52 victory. Shooting a sizzling 60.0% on the night and racing to a 71-21 halftime lead, the USA took down Argentina 121-49, setting up a North American gold medal contest against also-unbeaten Canada. All 12 members of the USA squad got on the scoreboard, led by Scottie Barnes’ game- high 20 points and six of the USA U16 men’s record 26 steals. Behind 19 points, five rebounds and four assists from Carey, the USA rolled to a 111-60 win over Canada to claim the gold medal. Holding Canada to just 29.6% shooting from the field, the USA shot a 60.0% and saw six players finish in double-digit scoring. Canada was the only team over the five-game tournament that managed to gain a lead on the USA, holding it for fewer than three minutes. After Canada had an early 6-3 edge, the USA took the lead for good on a Wendell Moore Jr. steal and layup that put the red, white and blue up 7-6. After owning a 10-point lead at the end of the first quarter, the USA dominated the second quarter 23-8 for a 49-24 halftime lead. While the USA just missed breaking its U16 records for most points scored in a tournament by two points (565 points, 2009), it did eclipse several other of the USA U16 records. New marks included field goal percentage (.568), free throws made (100) and free throw percentage (.704).

USA U16 MEN’S AMERICAS TEAM 2015 RESULTS

BAHIA BLANCA, ARGENTINA • JUNE 10-14, 2015

The USA U16 squad was riding a 15-0 streak heading into the event that was nearly halted in the final game of the tournament. Opening competition, the USA wasted no time in running to an 8-0 lead and rolling to a 105-54 victory over Puerto Rico. All 12 U.S. players scored, led by 19 points from Markus Howard. Behind 25 points and a FIBA Americas U16 record-tying seven 3-pointers from Gary Trent Jr., the USA eclipsed the single-game tournament record for 3-pointers made with 19 en route to a 115-51 victory over Dominican Republic. With six double-digit scorers, including two who posted double-doubles, the USA defeated Brazil 123-83. Wendell Carter Jr. paced the USA’s effort with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Jalen Hill had 14 points and 12 caroms. Surpassing Argentina 119-76 in the semifinal, the USA’s attack was led by 16 points apiece from Howard and Trent. Tre Jones set a new USA U16 single-game record for steals (7). Canada nearly spoiled the USA’s perfect run, but the red, white and blue was never deterred and pulled out a 77-60 win in the gold medal game after being down by 20 points in the second quarter. Looking at a 23-3 deficit, the USA fought its way back and trailed 37-27 at halftime. Within five points, 56-51, in the fourth quarter, the tide finally turned. After Carter missed completing a traditional 3-point play, Jarred Vanderbilt was there for the board and score and at 8:25, the USA was behind by just one, 56-55. While its defense stymied Canada, the USA took its largest lead of the night to that point, 60-56, with 5:49 to play. With renewed energy on both ends, the USA outscored Canada 17-4 to close out the game for the 17-point victory. Trent scored all 19 of his points in the second half and earned tournament MVP honors. Vanderbilt finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Jones had five steals and closed the tournament with a USA U16 record 19 steals. Also setting USA U16 competition records were Hill, who connected on 88.2% of his shots to set a new field goal percentage record, and Howard shot 48.4% from the arc to set a new mark for USA 3-point percentage.

USA U16 MEN’S AMERICAS TEAM 2013 RESULTS

MALDONADO, URUGUAY • JUNE 11-15, 2013

As the previous two USA Men’s U16 National Teams had done, the 2013 team rolled to a 5-0 slate en route to the FIBA U16 Americas gold medal. At the third installment of the biennial tournament, the U.S. scorched all comers by a record-setting 53.4-point margin of victory. Running to a 10-0 lead against a Mexico, the U.S. had 29 assists on 56 field goals en route to a 130-31 victory to open the tournament. The 130 points were the most any USA team had scored in a U16 championship and tied Argentina’s 130-point output in 2011. All 12 players scored, led by Diamond Stone’s 20 points. Next up was Argentina, but a 16-0 USA run to open the game quickly established no doubt as to which team was stronger and the U.S. earned the 96-72 win behind 21 points from Malik Newman. Harry Giles suffered a left knee injury early in the game and was sidelined the rest of the tournament. Meeting up against winless Bahamas in its third game, the red, white and blue went to a 121-52 win. Again all available players scored, led by 26 points on 11-of-13 shooting from Newman. The USA faced Puerto Rico in the semifinals. Despite a sluggish first quarter, which saw the Americans trail for the first time in four games, the U.S., behind 19 points apiece from Ivan Rabb and Stone, earned a 93-64 victory to set up a rematch with Argentina for the gold. Behind a decimating 28-7 second quarter, the USA beat Argentina 94-48 in the championship game to remain undefeated and collected gold. All 11 players put up points, and this time it was Josh Jackson who led with 16. Newman, who averaged team-highs of 16.2 points and 2.8 steals, was named tournament MVP.
