USA U16 MEN’S AMERICUP TEAM 2013 RESULTS
MALDONADO, URUGUAY • JUNE 11-15, 2013
As the previous two USA Men’s U16 National Teams had done, the 2013 team rolled to a 5-0 slate en route to the FIBA U16 AmeriCup gold medal. At the third installment of the biennial tournament, the U.S. scorched all comers by a record-setting 53.4-point margin of victory. Running to a 10-0 lead against a Mexico, the U.S. had 29 assists on 56 field goals en route to a 130-31 victory to open the tournament. The 130 points were the most any USA team had scored in a U16 championship and tied Argentina’s 130-point output in 2011. All 12 players scored, led by Diamond Stone’s 20 points. Next up was Argentina, but a 16-0 USA run to open the game quickly established no doubt as to which team was stronger and the U.S. earned the 96-72 win behind 21 points from Malik Newman. Harry Giles suffered a left knee injury early in the game and was sidelined the rest of the tournament. Meeting up against winless Bahamas in its third game, the red, white and blue went to a 121-52 win. Again all available players scored, led by 26 points on 11-of-13 shooting from Newman. The USA faced Puerto Rico in the semifinals. Despite a sluggish first quarter, which saw the Americans trail for the first time in four games, the U.S., behind 19 points apiece from Ivan Rabb and Stone, earned a 93-64 victory to set up a rematch with Argentina for the gold. Behind a decimating 28-7 second quarter, the USA beat Argentina 94-48 in the championship game to remain undefeated and collected gold. All 11 players put up points, and this time it was Josh Jackson who led with 16. Newman, who averaged team-highs of 16.2 points and 2.8 steals, was named tournament MVP.
