USA MEN’S PAN AMERICAN GAMES TEAM 2019 RESULTS

LIMA, PERU • JULY 31-AUG. 5, 2019

The U.S. (3-2) men saved their best for last at the Pan American Games, rallying from a 5-point deficit going into the fourth quarter and defeating Dominican Republic (2-3) 92-83 in the bronze medal game at Dibos Colisuem in Lima, Peru. The squad of BIG EAST standouts outscored its opponent 32-18 in the final frame. Team USA, by far the youngest team in the field, finished Pan American Games play with a 3-2 record while playing five games in five days under the leadership of head coach Ed Cooley (Providence). Going into the semifinals, the USA had no answers defensively against a veteran Argentina squad and lost 114-75. Argentina went on to win the gold medal. The U.S. led by 10 points with eight minutes to play but could not hold on and dropped an 87-84 decision to Puerto Rico in the final game of Pool play. The USA completed Pool A competition with a 2-1 record. The U.S. men advanced to the medal round with a hard fought 70-53 victory over Venezuela, a team considered to be one of the favorites in the tournament. Myles Powell (Seton Hall) scored a game-high 30 points. The U.S. men put on an offensive show in their Pan American Games debut and recorded a 119-84 victory over Virgin Islands. The USA sped to a 14-5 lead and was never threatened throughout the contest. The Pan American Games is a multi-sport event featuring teams from North, South and Central American and the Caribbean, which is orga- nized by the Pan American Sports Organization (PASO) and played every four years in the year preceding the Olympics.
