USA MEN’S AMERICUP TEAM 2022 RESULTS
RECIFE, BRAZIL • SEPTEMBER 2-11, 2022
The AmeriCup was originally slated for 2021 before being postponed due to COVID-19 pandemic. The U.S. ultimately finished with bronze behind Argentina and Brazil. The USA dropped its first game to Mexico 73-67. It was tightly contested in the first half, as Mexico went to halftime holding a one-point advantage. Second half runs from both teams kept the game close, but following a 58-58 tie, Mexico took control. Jeremy Pargo led the USA with 14 points, while Norris Cole scored 11. The U.S. rebounded against Venezuela, and a fast start cemented a 48-21 lead at halftime. Craig Sword stood out for the Americans in first half play, recording 12 points by halftime without missing a shot. While the U.S. made it rain on the court, the rain in Recife led to multiple leaks in the arena room which ultimately led to a postponement of the second half. Two days later, the U.S. notched a 101-49 victory and set tournament highs for points and assists (31). Sword ended with 19 points. Patrick McCaw tallied five steals which tied the USA single-game AmeriCup record. Before the U.S. finished against Venezuela, the team took its first win over Panama, 88-58. The team never and led by double figures following the 2:20 mark of the first quarter. With a 2-1 record and the most points through group play, the USA took the top seed in Group C and faced Puerto Rico in the quarterfinals. The U.S. trailed for the first 19 minutes before a 13-2 run gave the team its first lead (42-41). The third quarter was tight, but the U.S. took a 64-60 lead into the final frame and held off Puerto Rico until they tied it at 82 with 30 seconds left. After Cole gave the Americans a one-point lead with under 10 seconds remaining, Puerto Rico’s Tremont Waters took it back with a layup, putting the U.S. down 83- 84 with six seconds. Fueled by his missed opportunity at the free throw line seconds before, Cole hit the game-winning layup to punch a ticket to the semifinals. Scoreless in the first half, Cole finished with a team-high 20 points, the most points by an American across the tournament. In the semifinals, the U.S. faced undefeated Argentina. The two teams traded leads throughout the first frame, but a 10-0 run at the start of the second quarter gave Argentina its first double-digit lead of the game and a seven-point lead going into the half. Argentina outlasted the U.S. 82-73 with timely runs and an advantage at the free throw line. Cole record- ed four points in the first half, but much like his performance against Puerto Rico, came out firing in the second half and finished with a team-high 18 points, eight of which he scored consecutively in the fourth (7:35-5:12). The bronze medal game featured the U.S. and Canada in their 10th AmeriCup matchup since 1989. The U.S. trailed at halftime 36-29 but rallied in the third quarter to pull within one possession (57-54) entering the fourth. Gary Clark put the USA ahead, 75-73, on a layup with 1:27 remaining. From there, the Americans held on to earn the bronze. Cole was named to the all-tournament team.

USA MEN’S AMERICUP TEAM 2017 RESULTS
MONTEVIDEO, URUGUAY & CORDOBA, ARGENTINA • AUGUST 25-SEPTEMBER 3, 2017
It had been 10 years since the United States last competed in its zone championship. While the format of the competition was different and the official name of the Americas Championship had been altered to the FIBA AmeriCup, the results weren’t much different, seeing the USA win gold for the seventh time in nine appearances. This time the Americans rolled up a 5-0 record. USA center Jameel Warney was named MVP of the AmeriCup and Darrun Hilliard joined him on the five-member all-tournament team. Sprinting out to a 27-10 first quarter lead, the USA never looked back as it rolled to a dominating 97-56 victory over Panama in its opening game of Group C play. Four players scored in double digits, led by 17 points from Hilliard and Jonathan Holmes. Trailing by 11 points early in the second quarter, the USA scratched and defended its way back into the game and went on to outscore Uru- guay 24-16 in the fourth quarter to earn a critical 74-66 win. C.J. Williams scored a team-best 16 points, Reggie Hearn scored 15 points and Hilliard added 13 points, while Warney recorded eight points and a team-high 14 rebounds. The USA never trailed en route to a 72-56 win over Dominican Republic. C.J. Williams paced the USA with 15 points, Hilliard and Warney added 13 points apiece. Finishing Group C play 3-0, the victory propelled the USA into the AmeriCup semifinals. Xavier Munford’s double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds helped power the USA to a dominating 90-62 semifinals win over U.S. Virgin Islands and advanced the USA to the AmeriCup gold medal game. Seeing its gold medal dreams slipping away after falling behind by 20 points early in the third quarter, the USA shooting came to life and the American squad rallied for a remarkable comeback and earned an 81-76 victory over Argentina to win the gold medal. Warney finished with 21 points and seven rebounds; Hilliard added 15 points, six rebounds; Hearn contributed 14 points (4-6 3FG) and six rebounds; and Munford tossed in 10 points.

USA MEN’S AMERICUP TEAM 2007 RESULTS
LAS VEGAS, NEVADA • AUGUST 22-SEPTEMBER 2, 2007
The USA, comprised of 12 players selected from the 33-member National Team program, rumbled over its opposition at the FIBA Americas Championship and finished 10-0 to win gold to capture one of the FIBA Americas zone’s two berths for the 2008 Olympics. The USA extended its unbeaten streak in Olympic qualifying play to 36 consecutive wins, a run that dates back to the 1992 Tournament of the Americas. The USA averaged 116.7 points, the most by a USA senior national team since the 1994 USA Worlds team averaged 120.1. The USA defeated its opponents by an average of 39.5 points, the largest margin by a senior squad since the 1992 Olympics (by 43.8 ppg). Competing in preliminary group play, behind 17 points from Carmelo Anthony and Michael Redd, the Americans opened with a 112-69 victory over Venezue- la. Anthony and Redd again teamed to lead the U.S. scoring effort with 22 points each as the USA disposed of the U.S. Virgin Islands 123-59. Clamping down defensively and fueled by Anthony’s 25 points (9-12 FG), the U.S. posted a 113-63 decision over Canada. The USA closed preliminary play 4-0 after posting a 113-76 win against Brazil. Anthony and LeBron James each tallied 21 points. Advancing to the second round, the USA and Anthony continued their march and behind 28 points from Anthony claimed a 127-100 win over Mexico. James had 21 points as the U.S. rolled to a 117-78 win over Puerto Rico. James had a perfect shooting night and sank 11-of-11 shots, including a 4-for-4 from 3-point, to finish with 26 points as the U.S. manhandled Uruguay 118-79. Meeting previously unbeaten Argentina in the final second round game, the U.S. sprinted out and never looked back in a 91-76 victory that saw Kobe Bryant with 27 points. Moving to the semifinals, the USA dominated Puerto Rico 135-91 as Anthony and Redd recorded 27 and 23 points, respectively. Facing 2004 Olympic champi- on Argentina in the gold medal contest, the Americans sprinted to a 35-14 first quarter advantage and stormed to a 118-81 win. James scored a USA Olympic qualifying record 31 points (11-15 FG, 8-11 3FG). Dwight Howard added 20 points on perfect 7-for-7 shooting from the field. Statistically, there were plenty of impressive individual stat lines. Anthony averaged 21.2 points, a team high and the second most in the championship. James accounted for 18.1 points, Bryant added 15.3 points and Redd posted 14.4 points. Howard, 5.3 rebounds, paced the effort on the glass, while James, 4.7 assists, Jason Kidd, 4.6 assists, and Deron Williams, 4.6 assists, led the USA’s passing attack. The USA and Argentina secured berths for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Puerto Rico, Brazil and Canada earned spots in the 2008 FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament.
